They Told You to “Calm Down.” Cool. But How?

You’ve been told a hundred ways not to be:
Don’t overreact.
Don’t be dramatic.
Don’t let it get to you.
Don’t burn out.

But how many people actually showed you what to do instead?

If you’ve ever tried to "just breathe" through a spiral and felt worse... that’s not failure. That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do: survive.

True regulation doesn’t come from silence or control—it comes from connection.
To your body. Your senses. Your safety. Yourself.

You don’t need to shut it down. You just need to shift it.
Let’s talk about what actually helps.

💬 Comment your go-to “calm down” phrase (even if it never worked).
📍Save this for the next time your brain decides to sprint.

AI imagined therapist action figures look cute. But good therapy isn't plastic.

Your AI action figure therapist might be able to smile, nod, and hand you a worksheet…it might even say, "how does that make you feel?"

But it can’t meet your nervous system.
It won’t challenge your survival strategies with care.
And it definitely won’t sit in the weeds with you while you unlearn the stuff that’s still running the show.

Our team?
We’re not perfect. But we’re present.

We specialize in trauma, high-functioning anxiety, people-pleasing, and perfectionism—not because it’s trendy, but because we live and breathe this work.

We show up with real training, real structure, and our real selves—so you don’t have to perform.

Real people.
Real connection.
Specialized care.

She’s smiling.
Hair done.
Heels on.
Holding up a whole-ass house… and vacuuming, too.

We laugh because it’s extra.
But it’s also familiar, right?

This is how perfectionism works—it convinces us we have to keep everything clean, controlled, and polished to be okay.
And even when it’s too much, we tell ourselves it’s just what we “should” be doing.

Perfectionism isn’t vanity.
It’s a nervous system survival pattern.
And I wrote about it—because so many of us are still living like this (emotionally, at least).

Good Enough is Hard—Even for Me.
I don’t just help clients with overthinking—I live it. I can overthink with the best of them. The difference? I’ve learned some skills to pull myself out of the spiral (most of the time).
Case in point: picking a picture for this post.
🌀 I should use a real photo so it’s more relatable…
🌀 But I hate all the pictures of myself.
🌀 Maybe I should just use a stock photo?
🌀 Wait, isn’t that the opposite of being real and authentic?
🌀 Ugh. Okay, I took 5. I’ll pick the least objectionable and just use it.
The skills that help me stop overthinking:
⏳ Set a timer. I could spend an hour finding the right picture. Instead, I gave myself 5 selfies and picked something.
📏 Pick a max number of versions. No more endless edits. Five pictures, Three ideas, Two drafts max, Ten minutes to flesh out options -- then I move forward.
🧙 Let someone else proofread. I could tweak forever, but sometimes, I just need an outside brain to say, “This makes sense. Post it.”
🧠 Check in with my senses. Overthinking isn’t just in my head—it shows up in my body. I pause and ask: Am I tense? Is my gut saying no, or am I just scared to post?
🔄 Shift the goal. Instead of “make this perfect”, I tell myself “get this done so I can move on.” Perfection isn’t the goal—progress is.
I still get stuck sometimes. But these skills help me post the thing, send the email, make the decision, and keep moving. Maybe they’ll help you, too. 💙

(I'm still overthinking the attached image by the way... should I be smiling? Why am I looking off to the side? Why didn't I do something with my hair? Should I put a filter on so the skin isn't so skin like? If you don't stop it -- it'll never end. Give yourself some peace. 😎)

✨ Ground Yourself with an 8-Senses Check-In ✨
When you’re overwhelmed, scattered, or just feeling off, checking in with all 8 senses can help you reconnect with the present. Try it now:
🔹 Sight – Name 3 things you see. Notice colors, light, movement.
🔹 Touch – Feel textures, rub your hands together, notice the temperature.
🔹 Sound – Listen for 3 layers of sound—near, far, and in between.
🔹 Smell – Breathe in. What scents are around you? Coffee? Fresh air? Soap?
🔹 Taste – Sip water, chew gum, or focus on the flavor of your last bite.
🔹 Proprioception (Body Awareness) – Press your feet into the floor. Stretch. Notice where your body is in space.
🔹 Vestibular (Balance & Movement) – Gently sway, shift your weight, or take a slow deep breath.
🔹 Interoception (Internal Awareness) – How do you feel inside? Hungry? Tense? Take a moment to notice without judgment.
Your body is always giving you information. Tuning in can help you feel more grounded, present, and in control. 💙

It’s OK to Cry. We Have Tissues AND We’re Used to It.
In our office, we have little tissue packs that say "It's OK to cry." Because, shocker: crying is normal. And yet, do you know what happens practically every single time someone starts crying in therapy?
They immediately start apologizing.
😭 “Oh my god, I don’t even know why I’m crying.”
😭 “I’m so sorry, I told myself I wouldn’t do this.”
😭 “I swear I’m usually very emotionally stable.”
Y’all. It happens ALL. THE. TIME. Like, if we had a dollar for every "sorry" after a tear, we’d be running therapy sessions from a private island.
But listen. We are therapists. If people didn’t cry in therapy, we’d be concerned. That’s like going to a gym and apologizing for sweating. Or going to a buffet and apologizing for eating.
Crying isn’t weakness—it’s release. It’s your body’s way of clearing stress, processing emotions, and sometimes, yes, making a dramatic exit when life is just too much. And whether your tears are one delicate drop or a full ugly cry meltdown, they’re welcome here.
And not just here—in the real world too. You never need to apologize for being human. So, if you need to cry? Do it. In our office, in your car, in the cereal aisle at Target (happens more than you think).
Just remember: It’s OK to cry. We have tissues. And we’ll never, ever judge you for using them. 💙

Why Do We Have a Pillow That Says “F*ck” in Our Office?
Because therapy should be a place where you can be yourself. And let’s be honest—sometimes, nothing sums up the human experience quite like the word f*ck.
That pillow isn’t just a funny decor choice. It’s a permission slip. You don’t have to filter yourself here. If you need to vent, rant, curse, cry, or all of the above in rapid succession — we’re here for it. Therapy isn’t about saying the “right” things, it’s about saying the real things.
It’s also a little heads-up: we’re going to be ourselves, too. If you’re looking for a therapist who keeps it super formal and never lets an F-bomb slip, we might not be your people. And that’s okay! We want you to find a therapist who’s the right fit — even if that’s not us.
And yeah, the best part? Our amazingly talented therapist Nadya hand-crocheted this masterpiece. Because nothing says “welcome to therapy” quite like a cozy, lovingly handmade reminder that life is weird, healing is messy, and sometimes, all you can do is mutter f*ck under your breath and keep going. 💙

Sensory Regulation is an important piece of Emotional Regulation
💡 “If you struggle with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or dissociation, your sensory system might need support too.”
We talk a lot about mindset and emotions, but your body plays a huge role in how you feel. Learning what calms, energizes, or balances your nervous system can help you regulate emotions, focus better, and feel more in control.

10 Things Elaine Wants You to Know About Overthinking & Self-Doubt
If you’re a high-achieving overthinker who looks successful on the outside but feels like a fraud on the inside, Elaine gets it. She helps smart, driven people stop getting in their own way so they can finally feel confident.
✨ Here’s what she wants you to know:
1️⃣ Overthinking isn’t solving the problem—it’s just exhausting you.
2️⃣ Self-doubt doesn’t mean you’re not capable. It just means your brain is really good at spotting risks.
3️⃣ You don’t have to feel confident to act with confidence. Confidence is built through action, not perfection.
4️⃣ You are not a failure just because you don’t have it all figured out. (Nobody does.)
5️⃣ Your brain is wired for problem-solving—but sometimes, it turns you into the problem. Let’s untangle that.
6️⃣ You can be smart and still need support. Intelligence doesn’t cancel out struggle.
7️⃣ Perfectionism is just fear in a fancy outfit. Let’s find out what it’s really trying to protect you from.
8️⃣ You don’t have to earn rest. Your value isn’t based on how productive you are.
9️⃣ Your inner critic is loud, but it’s not right. You don’t have to listen to it.
🔟 You don’t have to figure this out alone. Therapy can help you stop overthinking and start living.
💬 Which one hits home for you? Drop a 💡 if you needed this today. Elaine is here when you’re ready.
