October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, highlighting the important role ultrasound plays in diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of health conditions.

Vascular ultrasound uses sound waves to help physicians evaluate blood flow and identify problems in the arteries and veins. VVI’s vascular lab offers testing for conditions including venous insufficiency, DVT, peripheral arterial disease, carotid disease, and aortic aneurysms.

This month, we also recognize the skilled vascular ultrasound professionals who help make accurate diagnosis and effective treatment possible.

Endovenous ablation is a minimally invasive treatment used to address vein dysfunction at its source. By targeting the affected vein, this procedure helps redirect blood flow to healthier pathways, improving circulation over time.

It is performed in an outpatient setting and is designed to support both comfort and long-term vein health.

Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that appear just beneath the skin, often forming red, blue, or purple web-like patterns on the legs. While they are commonly considered a cosmetic concern, they can sometimes be linked to underlying vein conditions.

Factors such as genetics, prolonged sitting or standing, and hormonal changes can all contribute to their development over time.

Understanding what is causing these veins is the first step in determining whether treatment may be beneficial.

Chronic knee pain, especially from osteoarthritis, is often linked to ongoing inflammation within the joint. Geniculate artery embolization (G*E) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to reduce the inflammation by targeting the small blood vessels contributing to pain.

Using image-guided technology, this procedure helps decrease blood flow to inflamed areas of the knee, which can lead to reduced pain and improved mobility over time.

For patients who are not ready for surgery or looking for alternative options, this approach offers a non-surgical path to relief.

Carotid artery disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the brain. Over time, this buildup can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of stroke, often without noticeable symptoms early on.

In some cases, the first warning sign may be a temporary episode such as sudden weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking. These symptoms should never be ignored.

Early detection and monitoring play an important role in reducing risk and protecting long-term brain health.

Compression therapy is a simple way to support circulation and improve overall vein health. By applying gentle pressure to the legs, compression socks can help manage swelling, promote blood flow, and reduce the risk of clotting.

When used appropriately, they can be an effective part of maintaining comfort and supporting long-term vascular health.
