I had a closet FULL of clothes… and nothing I wanted to wear. 😩
I’d pull out an outfit I loved, try it on, look in the mirror, and take it right back off.
Then I’d do it again. And again.
I remember looking at myself from the side and thinking, “I look pregnant.”
Here’s what made it even more frustrating…
I’m a functional medicine practitioner with nearly 30 years in healthcare. I understood nutrition, insulin resistance, and metabolism.
So why couldn’t I figure out my OWN body?
Because I was asking the wrong question.
Instead of “How can I eat less?” I needed to ask, “What’s changed in my metabolism?”
After 50, changes in insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, sleep, and hormones can make weight management more challenging. Simply eating less doesn’t address all of those factors.
Here are 4 things I wish I’d focused on sooner:
💛 1. Look beyond blood sugar. Fasting glucose and A1c don’t tell the whole story. Fasting insulin may provide additional insight.
💛 2. Protect your muscle. Get adequate protein and incorporate resistance training. Losing muscle while losing weight isn’t the goal!
💛 3. Pay attention to cravings. Constant hunger and food noise make consistency difficult. Look at meal composition, sleep, and eating patterns.
💛 4. Stop relying on the scale alone. Track your waist, strength, energy, and how your clothes fit.
You can spend months trying diets, supplements, and exercise routines without understanding what YOUR body needs.
I know because I did it.
Eventually, I focused on supporting my metabolic health rather than simply restricting calories.
I also added something to my daily routine that made a noticeable difference in my cravings and food noise.
First, I noticed deeper sleep. Then my cravings quieted.
And over time?
18 pounds gone. Two clothing sizes down. And I maintained my muscle. 🙌
But the biggest change wasn’t the scale.
It was finally feeling comfortable in my own clothes again. 💛
If you’re over 50 and your closet reminds you how much your body has changed, I understand.
