🔎 Moffitt Breast Screenings 🔍

Moffitt experts recommend that every woman at average risk of breast cancer should start screening at age 40. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a mammogram every other year from ages 40 to 74 to lower the risk of dying from the disease (US Preventative Service Task Force, 2024: https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/recommendation/breast-cancer-screening).

For National Mammography Day, this COE DataPoint infographic looks at 10 years of breast screenings at Moffitt Cancer Center: the types of screenings patients receive, their ages and insurance, and where they live, from our 23-county catchment area across Florida and beyond.

🧭 COE Breast Navigation 🧭

Patient navigation helps more women get screened for breast cancer. A CDC Community Preventive Services Task Force review found that navigation services raised breast cancer screening by a median of 12 percentage points, and the task force recommends them as a way to advance health equity (Community Preventative Services Task Force, 2022, https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/164181).

Since 2016, our COE community navigators assisted community members experiencing breast cancer find their way through the health system. They connect people to care, find financial support, help them talk with providers and handle paperwork, and offer cultural and language support.

For National Mammography Day, our COE DataPoint infographic looks back on 10 years of this work: who we serve, where they live, and the support they need most.

🥂 Ladies Night/Day Events 🥂

Regular screening mammography can lower breast cancer deaths by 40%. Yet only about half of eligible women get screened every year (Radiological Society of North America, 2024: https://www.rsna.org/news/2024/february/breast-screening-at-40-saves-lives). Health education helps close that gap.

October 16 is National Mammography Day. To mark it, our COE DataPoint infographic looks back on 10 years of Ladies Night/Day events, which are free community events where neighbors learn about breast cancer prevention, screening, treatment and survival, hereditary cancer and genetic testing, and hear from survivors.

Thank you to the partners who have brought these events to their communities. Take a look at the infographic below and share it with someone who's due for a mammogram.

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Moffitt’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement recognizes team members and partners that have been key to reaching and engaging Spanish-speaking populations.

For nearly 50 years (combined) of service, Moffitt team members Ms. Jeannette Palencia (27 years), Ms. Viviam Sifontes (11 years) and Ms. Viviana Suarez (8 years) have been providing outreach and education across Moffitt’s 23-county catchment area reaching over 50,000 individuals in Hispanic communities.

Importantly, their reach would not have been as successful without the help of their longtime partners like Hispanic Services Council (10+ years of partnership), Town and Country Senior Senter (13 years of partnership) and Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA, 15+ years of partnership).

We extend an invitation to everyone to join us at some of our events to end this month’s celebration in honoring the Hispanic culture through cancer prevention education and screening community events:
⭐ Mexican Consulate XXVI Binational Health 2026 on October 15th in Orlando, FL
⭐ Hispanic Services Council The Active Parents Network Town & Country Breast Cancer Awareness Health Education Workshop on October 15th in Tampa, FL
⭐ World Breast Cancer Day Education and Screening on October 19th in Orlando, FL

Dr. Vani Simmons is grateful for the opportunity to spend a day with Leadership Tampa Bay, a program of the Tampa Bay Chamber, exploring the people, places, and stories that make our Tampa community unique from the Tampa Museum of Art, Inc., Tampa Bay History Center, Tampa Theatre, and Stageworks Theatre.

Each experience offered a different window into Tampa’s past and present and was a great a reminder of how arts, history, and culture help create connected, vibrant communities. It also got Dr. Simmons thinking, "How can we bring more art, creativity, and cultural experiences into our community events to create deeper connections and more meaningful engagement?"

Moffitt Cancer Center and Feeding Tampa Bay are developing a meaningful partnership focused on bringing valuable health resources directly to the community.

As part of this effort, Keith Liotta, To***co Treatment Specialist with Moffitt Cancer Center's Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) office has been joining Feeding Tampa Bay’s outreach efforts to provide to***co cessation resources, information about lung cancer screenings, and education on the benefits of quitting to***co.

This work is part of a broader effort at Feeding Tampa Bay to connect individuals and families with resources to support their health. Through its partnership with Suncoast Community Health Centers, Feeding Tampa Bay offers access to a federally qualified health center for those uninsured or underinsured with primary care services.

Looking ahead, the partnership will expand to include one-on-one to***co cessation counseling sessions, which are planned to begin in the coming months. These sessions will provide individuals with personalized support and resources to help them take meaningful steps toward quitting to***co.

By bringing prevention and education directly into the community, Moffitt Cancer Center and Feeding Tampa Bay are working together to make important cancer prevention resources more accessible.
