Those of us navigating life with diverse abilities, adapt and thrive in our environment, as does the octopus 🐙
Please do not assume that a person with a disability needs help. If you feel the urge to want to help, then please ask first before jumping in and just doing. Most of us living with a disability or differences have learned alternative ways of navigating life. Some of us may use mobility aids or assistive tools, devices, or technology, while others use different techniques or methods to accomplish daily tasks. How or whatever it is we do, it is our normal. If you are curious, please always ask us (and ask us, not the people we are with). It is best to get accurate information about the person you are curious about and what we need, as no two people are exactly the same.
When you offer your assistance and it is not accepted, do NOT take offense. We understand you have good intentions but not everyone requires help. Please note that our “no” to your assistance this time does not mean it won’t be appreciated another time.
When you offer your assistance and it is accepted, your next question needs to be “How can I best help?” No two people do things exactly the same way or require the same assistance. The person who has the disability knows what is best for them so please just follow our lead.
Here is one tip you can do that promotes dignity and creates inclusion.
Just say “hello”. Your friendly gesture demonstrates that you are treating the person with the disability they same as you would anyone else. When you say “hello” you present the opportunity for us to ask for help if we need it but you don’t suggest we need it, by asking. Your verbal “hello” is also taken as that smile, nod, and friendly gesture that people who have low vision or who are blind, miss out on.
People with diverse abilities or disabilities are people just like everyone else only our body or brain works differently, that’s all.
“Having a disability does not change who we are, it changes our interactions with the world. “ Gina Martin
