Most families call an agency for the first time with no idea what a good answer sounds like. Here is what to ask.
1. Who exactly is coming into the house, and will it be the same person? Consistency is the whole ballgame, especially with dementia. A rotating cast of strangers is not care, it is traffic.
2. What happens when that caregiver is sick? Every agency has an answer to this one. You want to hear a specific one, with a process behind it, rather than a reassurance.
3. How do you match a caregiver to a client? Listen for whether the answer is about the person or about the schedule.
4. What can you tell me about paying for this? A straight answer names the real options. For this office those are VA-provided benefits including Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care, private pay, Medicare's GUIDE program, Aid and Attendance, and long-term care insurance, where we help with the invoicing and submissions. An agency that promises you qualify for something before anyone has looked at your situation is telling you what you want to hear.
