In partnership with Capaz we have begun making masks to be given out in the local hospitals in Maputo, Mozambique in a effort to stop the spread of Cornavirus. The local community is coming together to donate capulanas (traditional material) but we need funds to purchase elastic and pay the ladies that are sewing. Will you consider donating? Together we can change the course.

Friends of PLeDGE:
We know times are stressful and frightening everywhere. We also know that we can all act to make a difference in the course of this pandemic.

Mozambique has not yet had a first case of COVID-19; PLeDGE is working now to be ready when we do. We need to protect and empower the doctors and patients on the front lines.

100% of donations will go to immediate procurement, distribution, and training in the use of hospital infection prevention supplies.

The work of PLeDGE overlaps with local nonprofits. Over the past 3 years, PLeDGE volunteers have also helped out at Masana, an organization that supports street youth. Often, when a street boy is injured or sick, he has nowhere to turn but their “family” at Masana. And Masana, in turn, calls PLeDGE for help.

We are stronger together.

Before becoming a resident Maria Augusta was a general physician and the director of a health center on the border of South Africa and Mozambique. Due to the high traffic through the border, their health center treated many victims of car crashes.

She was managing patients with broken legs, external and internal bleeding. With little knowledge of emergency care, all she could do was give them IV fluids until the ambulance could transport them to Maputo. Sometimes patients would die because no one knew how to evaluate and stabilize patients' airway, breathing, and circulation status.

That is why Maria Augusta is a part of pioneering emergency medicine in Mozambique.

This #givingtuesday give Maria Augusta the resources she needs to succeed in #emergencymedicine. Give to #pledgehealth

Education is the heart of what we do. You cannot make great healthcare happen with expensive technology; indeed, great education often reduces physicians' reliance on expensive technology.

This is how and where you'll find us every Wednesday. This is our weekly day of educational sessions, ranging from case discussion, deep dives into science articles and skill-building sessions.

Please consider a donation to enable our residents to access a new and incredible educational opportunity.

Two and a half years ago, shortly after we started the residency program, we had the opportunity to travel to Pretoria for two seminars in emergency care. Those seminars taught life-saving facts and skills that still inform our practice.

Now, these Mozambican physicians have the opportunity to return to train for four months with some of the best specialists on the continent.

Will you help us get them there?

Engaging Bus Drivers to Save Lives

Dra. Euridxe Barbosa is a member of our first class of emergency medicine residents, currently in her 3rd year of training.

Euridxe is changing emergency care in Mozambique through her research into the emergency care provided by taxi drivers and bus drivers in Maputo.

In countries where ambulances and 911 systems aren’t readily available, people’s lives depend on the willingness of lay first responders to stop and provide care — often these are bus, taxi, and truck drivers.

Euridxe is working on improving emergency care in Mozambique by learning what the Mozambican bus drivers know about first aid and safe transport of injured patients through structured questionnaires and surveys.

“I think to myself, how did this person get here? I decided to do emergency medicine because of my (previous) work in emergency services. I loved it. When (I) graduated I spent a lot time working in the emergency service, it was very interesting and amazing but I felt that something else was missing, in particular when I did CPR. I needed to be (fully) capable in this area to do my best for the patient. When I heard that this specialty was starting I took the exam, was approved, and I left my city to travel to Maputo for the beginning (of) the residency. Now I can say that I am in love with this, I can't imagine doing another specialty because Emergency Medicine saves life.”

She is on a mission to develop plans and gather materials to properly train these bus drivers to efficiently and safely transport people to the hospital.

From all of us at PLeDGE Health we want to wish a very happy birthday to our very own Abigail Hankin-Wei! We are so grateful for you! May the next year of life be full of joy in both the work of emergency medicine and life in general.

Two years.

This photo was taken the first day I met our group of physicians destined to become Mozambique’s first emergency medicine specialists.

Two years of striving, of overcoming obstacles. Of leaving families to participate in trainings. Of facing impossible odds. Of doing it anyway.

Tuesday and Wednesday, they will take the first-ever “Intermediate Exam” in Mozambique for emergency Medicine residents. Two grueling days of written and oral questions.

Those who pass, will become Senior Residents in Emergency Medicine.

They’re terrified, but they’re ready.

Hold these guys in your hearts this week, please. And say a prayer of thanks to their families who hold them up.
