🧠🏆 ATHLETES, SEEKING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT ISN’T ABOUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU — IT’S ABOUT YOUR EVOLUTION!
We need MORE mental health practitioners on college campuses, especially those who understand the unique psychological demands of being a student-athlete!
🎙️ In my latest interview on The Mental Playbook, I sit down with Julia Jackson, Duke University short-distance runner Julia Jackson and creator of The Inner Margin The Inner Margin Athlete Performance Journal, to discuss the evolution of mental health resources in collegiate athletics and why seeking support should be normalized.
For too long, athletes have been conditioned to push through EVERYTHING.
🏃♀️ Push through physical pain.
🧠 Push through psychological distress.
💪 Push through performance anxiety.
❤️ Push through emotional struggles.
But here’s what I want every athlete to understand:
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE STRUGGLING TO BENEFIT FROM MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT!
Mental health care isn’t just about treating disorders. It’s also about developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, resilience, healthier relationships, and the psychological skills necessary to thrive in sports AND life.
We don’t judge athletes for working with strength coaches, physical therapists, or nutritionists to optimize their performance.
So why should working with a mental health professional be any different?
And to our colleges and universities: expanding access to qualified mental health practitioners isn’t a luxury. It’s an investment in the health, development, and futures of student-athletes.
Athletes are HUMAN BEINGS first. Their identity, value, and well-being extend far beyond their athletic achievements.
✨ It’s not about what’s wrong with you. It’s about discovering what’s possible when you invest in your own evolution.
