A walk is not automatically therapeutic. Attention has to land somewhere other than the loop it was already running.

Five ways to do that, one at a time.

If being outside stirs up more than it settles, that is worth bringing to someone who can sort through it with you.

Wednesday at Middletown Memorial Hall, Dr. Serravalle was the first face guests saw at the Middletown Area Chamber of Commerce Fall Business Luncheon.

As a Chamber ambassador, she greeted people at the door as they came in. She is an introvert, so the door was a choice rather than a comfort. Our practice manager, Jada Senter, was there with her.

Center for Balanced Living was a lunch sponsor this year, alongside presenting sponsors Birdie's Links and Drinks and ChristianaCare. A practice our size grows through people who know us, and people get to know us in rooms like this one.

Thank you to the Chamber for a well-run afternoon, and to everyone she talked with, including Townsend's chief of police, Stephanie of Birdie's, attorney Heather Long, Brian Moreau of AKA Advisory, Mary Jameson of Mary Kay, and Soluna of Zion Sheet Metal, one of the Chamber's newest members.

Our website has a new front door.

Center for Balanced Living is one practice doing three kinds of work: therapy and evaluation for families, training for clinicians, and writing for readers. The new homepage gives each its own way in, so you can go straight to the part that is about you.

The same idea runs through our mail. You can now choose what you hear from us: monthly letters from the practice, Make It Make Sense every other week, news for clinicians a few times a year, or new essays when they are published. Pick one or all four, and that is all you will get.

Choose yours, link in the comments.

Families in Appoquinimink and Smyrna tell me the same thing. He was fine until sixth grade.

He was not fine. The scaffolding was doing the timekeeping.

Around fifth and sixth grade the environment changes underneath them. Multiple teachers, longer assignments, projects with a due date two weeks out and no checkpoints in between. That structure assumes a working internal clock, and it arrives at the same moment adults stop supervising.

It does not happen often. When it does, we stop and give the child space to regulate and time to adjust. Testing can feel like a scary process, and we want the kiddos to feel comfortable.

Every Tuesday at 6 p.m., Dr. Serravalle walks through our evaluation process on Zoom and answers questions directly. You do not have to ask anything. Come listen. To register, email Kimmy at [email protected].

Most people go outside and keep having the same day. The setting only does something when you use it on purpose.

Five moves for October, each tied to a situation. The walk where you are already ruminating. The window you have during a hard workday. The ten minutes between things.

Educational content only, not a substitute for individual care.

You are allowed to be bad at the new thing for longer than feels reasonable. Competence comes after the awkward part. There is no route around it.

Most of us are stressed most of the time. That is not what a stress disorder is.

A stress disorder is defined by what has happened to your ability to manage stress, and it breaks in one of two directions. Overwhelmed: the smallest thing sets the nervous system off, and it does not come back down on its own. Overcontrolled: stress has been constant for so long that it stops registering, and the person tells you, sincerely, that they are fine.

The overwhelmed person knows they are struggling. The overcontrolled person often does not.
