On World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we're highlighting the important role hospice and palliative care play in helping patients and families navigate serious illness.

Both hospice and palliative care focus on comfort, quality of life and support, helping patients receive care that aligns with their goals and wishes. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and alongside treatment. Hospice care is typically chosen when treatment is no longer working or a patient decides to stop curative treatment for a terminal illness, shifting the focus to comfort, quality of life and support for both the patient and their loved ones.

Employee Spotlight 💚

Cagney’s Why Amedisys Hospice 💚

My passion for hospice social work comes from a genuine desire to be there for people during some of the most difficult and meaningful moments of their lives. I find purpose in being able to offer compassion, support, and a sense of comfort to patients and their families when they need it most. Knowing that I can make even a small difference during such an important part of someone’s end-of-life journey is incredibly meaningful to me.

Hospice is especially personal to me because I have had family members utilize hospice services. Experiencing firsthand the support and comfort hospice provided to my loved ones and our family was truly a blessing. That experience deepened my appreciation for hospice care and reinforced my desire to provide that same compassion, support, and guidance to others during such an important time in their lives.

Today we are spotlighting our Director of Operations, Melissa 💚

Here is my WHY ⭐️

Hi! My name is Melissa. I am a wife, mother, GiGi, dog & cat mom, nurse, Christian and leader. I love spending time outdoors, enjoying quiet nights at home with my family, and I have a serious obsession with purses!

Nine years ago, I was led to hospice, and I truly believe God had a purpose for bringing me here. What began as a career became a calling—one that ultimately allowed me to be by my best friend’s side during her final days.

Throughout my hospice journey, I have had the privilege of caring for patients and families in some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I have held patients’ hands, sat beside caregivers, helped manage symptoms, provided education and support, and simply been present when someone needed a compassionate person beside them.

My journey has taken me from providing hands-on care, to clinical management, and now to my role as Director of Operations. Each position has taught me something different, but one lesson has remained constant: every person has a story.

Hospice has taught me the importance of meeting people where they are, listening without judgment, and loving and supporting them through every step of their journey. It has reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer is simply our presence.

I am incredibly proud to serve in leadership and to have the opportunity to guide, support, and encourage our team. Together, we strive every day to provide care that is not only clinically excellent, but also compassionate, personal, and dignified.

Hospice is where my heart is. I am forever grateful that God led me to this calling and to Amedisys, where I have the privilege of serving patients, families, and an incredible team every day.

My Why for Hospice Nursing 💚

I became a hospice nurse because I believe everyone deserves to feel loved, valued, comfortable, and cared for until the very end.

After starting my career in the fast-paced emergency department, hospice taught me the beauty of slowing down—to listen, learn someone’s story, hold a hand, ease a fear, and simply be present.

Over the years, I’ve grown from holding the hands of patients and families to now helping manage and guide their entire hospice experience. Having experienced hospice with my own family, I understand how meaningful it is to have someone there to provide comfort, guidance, and reassurance during such a difficult time.

I may not be able to change the outcome, but I can change the experience.

That is my why 💚

Today our employee spotlight is Tia Burkhead 💚

My Hospice Why :

When I look back over my many years in nursing, I realize that my journey has been about so much more than a career. It has been about people.

I started my nursing career as an LPN. Eventually, I went back to school, continued my education, and became an RN. Most of my nursing career was spent in long-term care, and for many years I worked in management.

Through all those years, I had the privilege of caring for so many people. I got to know their personalities, their families, their stories, their fears, and their hopes. I learned that nursing is about so much more than medication or treatment—it is simply being there.
As my career continued, I found myself drawn more and more to the end-of-life journey. I realized that there is something incredibly meaningful about being invited into a family’s life during one of their most difficult moments.

That is what hospice means to me.

Hospice is not about giving up. To me, hospice is about showing up.
It is showing up when a patient is frightened. Showing up when a family doesn’t know what to expect. Showing up when there are questions that are difficult to ask and even harder to answer.
It is holding someone’s hand.
It is listening.
It is comforting a family member who is struggling.
It is helping a patient feel safe in their own surroundings.
It is making sure that someone who has spent a lifetime caring for others is now cared for with the same dignity and compassion.
And sometimes, it is simply sitting quietly beside someone so they don’t have to be alone.

One of the things I treasure most about hospice is the relationships that develop. You are welcomed into people’s lives during a very vulnerable and sacred time. You hear their stories, learn what matters most to them, and become someone they can trust.

Every patient has a story. Every family has a story. And every end-of-life journey is different.
For me, hospice is about honoring those stories.
It is about helping people live their remaining days with comfort, dignity, peace, and as much quality of life as possible. It is about supporting not only the patient, but the people who love them.

After all these years in nursing, I have come to understand that sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is not something we can put in a medicine cup or write on a care plan.
Sometimes, it is our presence.
A hand to hold.
An ear to listen.
A calm voice when someone is afraid.
A shoulder for a family member to lean on.
And the reassurance that no one has to walk this journey alone.
That is why hospice is so meaningful to me.

That is why I believe hospice is more than a job. It is a calling. 💚
