Every year, more than 10 million babies are born with a serious birth defect around the world. Birth defects are a leading cause of death in the first year of life, and newborns who survive may be physically or mentally disabled, posing a significant financial burden on their families, communities, and countries.
Every year on March 3rd, World Birth Defects Day is observed to raise awareness of this major global problem and to call for increased surveillance, prevention, care, and research to assist babies and children.
Birth defects affect people of all races and ethnicities, so let us share some tips with you on how to reduce your chances of having a baby with a birth defect.

For optimal health and nutrition, a balanced diet is essential.
It protects against heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, among other chronic noncommunicable diseases. A healthy diet requires a variety of foods and a reduction in sodium, carbohydrates, saturated and industrially produced trans-fats.
A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of foods. These includes:
Staples like cereals (wheat, barley, rye, maize or rice) or starchy tubers or roots (potato, yam, taro or cassava).
Legumes (lentils and beans).
Fruit and vegetables.
Foods from animal sources (meat, fish, eggs and milk).

Tapering is the process of gently weaning someone off of a drug or substance in order to decrease or eliminate withdrawal symptoms. At regular intervals, the individual is given decreasing doses of the medicine.
A tapering technique allows the individual's system to adjust to gradually reducing medication/drug dosages.
So don’t ever stop taking a prescribed medication without talking to your doctor.

The amount of sleep you need is determined by a number of factors, including your age.
Sleep deprivation of less than seven hours each night has been related to ill health in adults, including weight gain, a BMI of 30 or higher, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression.
Talk to your doctor if you're worried about how much sleep you are getting.

Is it okay for patients to use outdated medications? It's always advisable to utilize non-expired meds; it's just the safest option.
Get a new prescription before it expires if a medicine is required for chronic and potentially life-threatening ailments, such as a heart problem, cancer therapy, seizure, or life-threatening allergy. If a patient takes an expired medication and sees that it has no effect, the medication should be replaced.
These drugs may pose serious problems if they're expired:
-a biologic product
-insulin
-a refrigerated liquid or other medicine
-eye drops
-injectable medicine
-a specially compounded medication
-any drug that looks like it is degraded or cloudy, or has a noxious smell, should be discarded and replaced immediately; do NOT use.

If you're starting a new drug that may cause drowsiness, it is recommended that you avoid activities that require alertness, like driving, until you find out how the medication affects you.
In some cases, your sleepiness will lessen over time, as your body adjusts. If your medication is causing excessive drowsiness or affecting your ability to drive or work, call your doctor.

We take medications to diagnose, treat, or prevent illness. They come in lots of different forms and we take them in many different ways. You may take a drug yourself, or a healthcare provider may give it to you.
Drugs can be dangerous, though, even when they’re meant to improve our health. Taking them correctly and understanding the right way to administer them can reduce the risks.

Why is protein important in your diet?
Because it plays a key role in the creation and maintenance of every cell in our bodies. It fuels our cells and powers our bodies.
Here are five compelling reasons why you should make sure you are getting enough protein every day:
1. Build. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage and skin. In fact, your hair and nails are mostly composed of protein.
2. Repair. Your body uses it to build and repair tissue.
3. Oxygenate. Red blood cells contain a protein compound that carries oxygen throughout the body. This helps supply your entire body with the nutrients it needs.
4. Digest. About half the dietary protein that you consume each day goes into making enzymes, which aids in digesting food, and making new cells and body chemicals.
5. Regulate. Protein plays an important role in hormone regulation, especially during the transformation and development of cells during puberty.

Just like certain prescriptions should be taken with food or with a full glass of water for best results, timing also matters when it comes to taking your daily medications. The best time to take medication may vary depending on the drug, but if your pharmacist says to take your dose at the same time each day, it’s best that you do so.
Take these as an example:
FUROSEMIDE - This is a diuretic drug which helps you get rid of excess fluid via your urine, it is recommended to take this in the morning as you don’t want to be getting up at night for this.
Anti-histamines - This medication can cause drowsiness so it is best to take it before bedtime.
Anti-cholesterol - the enzymes controlling cholesterol production in your liver are most active at night. So there may be some benefit to taking lipid (cholesterol) lowering drugs, such as simvastatin, at night.
Your prescription label will contain pertinent information regarding your dose, how often to take it, and any other special instructions (such as when to take medication, whether to take it with food, or warnings about side effects). If you have any questions about when you should be taking your medications, be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist.
