π¦π WHAT'S THE WORST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
We've all received advice at some point in our lives. Some of it has been life-changing. Some of it has been genuinely helpful.
And some of it? Well... let's just say it probably should have come with a warning label! π
As a yoga teacher, somatic movement educator, and lifelong learner, I've spent a lot of time exploring the beliefs, expectations, and messages we carry with us. And I've come to realize that not all advice is good adviceβeven when it comes from someone who genuinely cares about us.
πΏ HERE ARE A FEW PIECES OF ADVICE I THINK WE SHOULD QUESTION...
π "NO PAIN, NO GAIN."
Really? Because I've spent thousands of hours teaching people that pain is often a signal worth listening to! Growth doesn't always require suffering. Sometimes, the most meaningful progress happens when we learn to work WITH our bodies instead of pushing against them.
πΈ "JUST PUSH THROUGH IT."
Sometimes perseverance is important. But sometimes, pushing through exhaustion, stress, or emotional overwhelm is exactly what keeps us stuck. Rest isn't weakness. Knowing when to pause is wisdom.
π¦ "ALWAYS PUT OTHERS FIRST."
I spent years believing that being available, helpful, and accommodating was simply part of being a good person. But here's what I've learned... You can care deeply about others AND have healthy boundaries. You can be compassionate without sacrificing your own well-being. And you can say NO without feeling guilty about it.
πΏ "DON'T LET YOUR EMOTIONS GET THE BEST OF YOU."
What if, instead of suppressing our emotions, we learned to understand them? Our emotions can provide valuable information about our needs, experiences, and boundaries. We don't have to act on every emotion, but we don't have to ignore them either.
π "YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS."
Oh, I REALLY disagree with this one! I believe we can continue learning, growing, changing, and discovering new possibilities throughout our entire lives. You're never too old to begin again. Never too old to try something new. And never too old to surprise yourself!
β¨ HERE'S WHAT I'VE LEARNED...
Just because someone gives you advice doesn't mean you have to follow it. Just because you've believed something for years doesn't mean you can't question it. And just because something worked for someone else doesn't mean it's right for YOU. One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is permission to trust our own inner wisdom. After all, that's what Wise Owl Wellness is all about!
π¦ A LITTLE WISE OWL WISDOM:
Not every piece of advice deserves a place in your life. Keep what helps you grow, question what holds you back, and trust yourself enough to know the difference.
π¬ NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!
π₯ WHAT'S THE WORST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Was it about your career? Relationships? Parenting? Health? Money? Or life in general?
And here's a bonus question...
Did you follow that advice, or did you know better? π
