Can we stop calling women “high maintenance” simply because they have needs?
Wanting affection isn't high maintenance.
Wanting communication isn't high maintenance.
Wanting your partner to follow through isn't high maintenance.
Wanting emotional intimacy isn't high maintenance.
Wanting respect isn't high maintenance.
Having standards isn't high maintenance.
Having boundaries isn't high maintenance.
Now, can any of those things be communicated poorly?
Of course.
Can someone demand unreasonable things?
Absolutely.
But having needs doesn't make you difficult.
And needing something doesn't mean someone else is obligated to provide it.
That's the part I wish we talked about more:
Your needs are information.
They tell you something about yourself. Then you get to decide what to do with that information.
And sometimes the answer isn't “How do I convince them to meet this need?”
Sometimes it's:
“Is this a relationship where this need can realistically be met?”
That's a much more powerful question.
