I sat down to go over my genetic report expecting charts, percentages, maybe a polite warning about broccoli. Instead, Val Prisecaru my friend and apparently some sort of wizard started explaining my life back to me.

Ni****ne? High risk. Alcohol? Low risk. I’m 47 years old, and I could’ve told you that much from the wreckage. But at 16? At 16, that information might’ve been worth more than every piece of advice I ever got.

Then came the athletic results. Apparently I had the genetics to compete at an Olympic level. Nobody told me. I spent my prime doing God knows what while an Olympic team may have been out there missing its least manageable recruit.

And anger has a genetic component, too.

Naturally, I’m pi**ed I found out so late.

That’s the strange power of this stuff. The report gives you the numbers. The conversation makes you look back at your life and say, “Well, son of a bitch. This is how a tattooer is created from God’s hands.

Twenty years ago I was flying to New York secretly to work in TV and the Art world while apprenticing at a tattoo shop in Tucson. I never told anyone at the shop. I didn’t want them to know, honestly I felt like they wouldn’t believe me. Didn’t say anything to people in New York either. I just wanted to be a tat man. It worked out . The cameras and gallery shows faded but still occasionally appear like a wild dog looking for s meal. Looking back that was weird of me to be so secretive. Luck was on my side because being weird in the art world and tattooing is just fine.
