Check your mailbox!

Swisher Memorial Healthcare System is asking residents what care your household needs and what is hard to get. About 1,000 households across the county--including Tulia, Kress, Happy, and out in rural areas--are getting a short survey in the mail this month from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC).
If one comes to your address, please take five minutes and send it back in the postage-paid envelope or scan the QR code to fill it out online. It costs you nothing but the time.

A few things worth knowing:
• It's real. The envelope comes from TTUHSC in Lubbock.
• It's anonymous. We do not ask your name, your address, or anything else that identifies you. We cannot tell who returned the surveys.
• It's short. Five questions (with multiple parts), front and back of two pages.
• It's in English and Spanish, so that everyone has the chance to respond.
• Please return it or fill it out online by November 10.

Your answers help decide which services this hospital works on over the next three years. Questions? Email Ben Bailey at Texas Tech at [email protected].

World Osteoporosis Day – October 20, 2026
Strong Bones. Stronger Future. Take Steps to Protect Your Bone Health!
Did you know that osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease”? That's because bone loss can occur without noticeable symptoms until a fracture happens.
On World Osteoporosis Day, Swisher Memorial Healthcare System encourages everyone to take steps toward building and maintaining strong, healthy bones.
Here are a few ways to help protect your bone health:
- Get enough calcium and vitamin D to support bone strength.
- Stay active with weight-bearing exercises like walking and appropriate strength training.
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
- Talk to your healthcare provider about your risk factors and whether a bone density screening is right for you.
- Take steps to prevent falls, especially as you get older.
Osteoporosis can affect both men and women, and the risk increases with age. The good news is that early detection and preventive care can make a meaningful difference.
This World Osteoporosis Day, remember that taking care of your bones today can help you stay active and independent tomorrow!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and today, on National Mammography Day, Swisher Memorial Healthcare System joins healthcare organizations across the country in emphasizing the importance of early detection and regular breast cancer screenings.

Did you know that mammograms can detect breast cancer before symptoms appear, often when it is most treatable?

Regular mammograms are one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early. While screening recommendations may vary based on age, family history, and individual risk factors, staying informed and discussing your screening schedule with your healthcare provider can make a meaningful difference.

At Swisher Memorial Healthcare System, we're committed to helping the women in our community stay informed, proactive, and empowered when it comes to their health.

This National Mammography Day, take a moment to prioritize your health. If you're due for a mammogram, talk with your healthcare provider about scheduling your screening.

Because when it comes to breast cancer, early detection can save lives!

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a reminder that one of the simplest ways to protect your health and the health of those around you is right at your fingertips!

At Swisher Memorial Healthcare System, we know that good hand hygiene plays an important role in preventing the spread of germs and reducing the risk of illness.

Here are a few simple ways to keep your hands clean and your family healthy:
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Remember to wash before eating or preparing food.
- Always wash after using the restroom, coughing, or sneezing.
- Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren't available.
- Encourage children to develop healthy handwashing habits early in life.

As cold and flu season approaches, these small everyday habits can make a big difference in keeping our community healthy.
