Once upon a time, I was able to observe an IG Live with of and , and something Stacey said to Onikah impacted me in such a big way: "I don't believe in balance, I believe in Jenga."

Stacey discusses stacking up the pieces of who we are and pulling out the pieces based on necessity and urgency. She discusses this consciousness of which pieces have to move RIGHT NOW, which pieces we want to move, and which pieces have to move but not with as much urgency. She goes on to say the most important part of this is structuring your life so you can move the pieces around and not be driven by someone else's urgency for us but rather by meeting our own responsibilities.

Inevitably, the Jenga tower will fall at some point (and continue to do so from time to time!) because sometimes the wrong piece gets pulled at the wrong time, but with agency and autonomy you can build it back.

I'll often use Stacey's Jenga analogy when discussing eat!ng d!sorder recovery with clients. Sometimes we pull out one piece thinking one thing will happen, but in reality the tower does unexpected things and may even wobble and shake and even tumble down. Sometimes there's urgency, and sometimes there's more space to choose the piece.

Through support and nurturing your autonomy and sense of agency, you can build your tower back—however many times it takes.

💜 If I say "DON'T LOOK!", how easy is it to not look???
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yeah, that's what I thought. It's like diet culture—once you see it, you can't un-see it (and if you stare at diet culture too long, it'll make you dizzy!).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And this, friends, is the season where diet culture climbs out of its storm drain to terrorize literally everyone in America. This is when the diet industry really ramps up their marketing to prey on anyone willing to pay.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The thing is, though, friends—YOU know the truth. You know diet culture offers temporary and unsustainable solutions to an industry-manufactured "problem".
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You're not the problem, friend. Your body isn't the problem. Diet culture is the problem. And once you see it, you can't un-see it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gird up your loins, friend. The next few weeks are going to be challenging with all the diet talk and shenanigans (we're looking at you "lifestyle changes" 👀). If a post, TV show, book, magazine—ANYTHING—is singing the praises of diet culture and isn't helpful to you, mute it. Hide it. Turn it off. Put it in the recycle bin. Unfollow it. You have permission to have boundaries and take care of yourself, friends. 💜

📣 Shout out to all the diet ̶s̶c̶a̶m̶s̶ companies that see the research on how harmful diets are and how 95% of individuals gain the weight back plus some and still commit to the capitalistic approach that fuels a $70+ billion industry of gaslighting its consumers.

💙 Hi friends! Over the next few weeks, it's a common time for friends and loved ones to gather and share time together. And a lot of the time during these gatherings, pictures tend to be involved. Pictures can be challenging for so many of us, and that's okay.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I want this post to be an encouragement, though, to all whom experience challenges when it comes to taking pictures.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you're constantly trying to figure out how to pose or look your best in an upcoming photo opportunity, it's hard to be present in the moment. When you're not present, you tend to miss out on moments like how your aunt's face lights up when she tells you that one story or maybe how your friend gets to laughing so hard they cry or maybe even that quiet moment when you're sitting out on the patio watching the leaves fall.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My encouragement is to step forward in bravery just as you are for the pictures. Take the picture and don't worry about your hair or how you look in those pants. It's okay if you take the picture and move on. 💙

💙 Your body is waiting for you come home to it, friends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No matter how hard you've fought it. No matter how much you hated it. No matter how much you tried to change it. No matter how long since you've connected with it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whenever you decide to come home to it, it’ll be there. 💙

💙 Friends, if you're in the middle of your eating disorder recovery journey, this thought of "I'll quit while I'm ahead" has probably entered your head more than once. 💭
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And you know what? That's a completely normal thought to have.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Normal, and yet, not entirely helpful. 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I get it, though—you're maybe feeling a little better or like you're "out of the woods" 🌲🌲🌲 even, but this is really just quasi-recovery. Full recovery is out there, friends!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Or maybe you're feeling overwhelmed, tired, frustrated (or D. All of the above) and just want to be over the whole thing. You want to get right to the healing portion of recovery and fast forward through all of the emotions and hard work of processing and nourishing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This work is hard, friends. And some days it just flat-out sucks. 🙃👍🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can think of a few instances where quitting while you're ahead is helpful (like not over-mixing muffin batter 🧁 or adding all the color in one spot of a shirt you're tie-dying 🎨), but eating disorder recovery isn't one of them. 💙

💚 Friends, I created this months ago, and it's fortuitous that 1. was talking about this very thing in her stories both yesterday and earlier this week and 2. it just happened to be next up in my current series.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't recall ever having to write sentences on a blackboard or even on paper (are they even helpful???), but this is a sentence-writing assignment I could actually get behind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📖 Read it: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies.
🗣 Say it aloud: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies.
✍🏼 Write it down: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies.
💭 Commit it to memory: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies.
✨ Put it into action: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies.
🎁 Share the lesson: "I will not comment on other peoples' bodies. 💚

💚 Hi, friends! Did you know the major driving force of bingeing and compulsive eating is undernourishment, or restriction? Yes, oh yes!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When your body is undernourished, it gets antsy, anxious, and will fixate on food. Even just the thought of restriction can drive urges to binge and compulsively eat!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your body fixates on food because nourishment is essential to your its ability to function and care for you. Your brain's number one source of energy is glucose, and your body's preferred source of glucose is from—you guessed it—food. And when it gets really antsy and anxious, it starts to fixate on food that gets glucose to the brain the easiest, and that means sweet, sugary foods.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So while you've been thinking you're addicted to sugar, your body is actually just trying to do everything in its power to procure nourishment (specifically, glucose). When your body finally does receive nourishment, your brain will release neurotransmitters to let you know it's grateful and reward you for keeping it going another day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This isn't an addiction pathway—this is a normal physiological response to restricting food or being undernourished.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You don't have an addiction to food, you have a restriction from food. 💚
