You’ve heard of fight, flight, and freeze. But what about fawn, find, and fold?

I sit down with therapist, professor, and author Chuck DeGroat to talk about his new book, Who You’re Becoming: The Slow and Courageous Work of Cultivating Character in a Narcissistic Age.

Chuck describes two places our nervous system goes when we’re dysregulated: storm and fog.

Storm is the gas pedal. Fog is the brake. And fold might be the one you recognize on the mornings you just can’t get out of bed.

We also talk about why real change can’t be microwaved, what Jesus may have actually meant by “be perfect,” and the hospital stay that taught a trained therapist to finally listen to his own gut.

Listen to Episode 362 of Sparking Wholeness wherever you get your podcasts. 🎧 (It’s also now available on YouTube!)

Chuck’s book releases today, and it’s such an incredible read. You want this in your library ASAP!

TLDR? If I see my body size is rapidly decreasing or increasing, it’s an alert to pay attention to. There might be a physiological stressor I need to address. But I choose to support myself beyond the number on the scale.

This is why I have a whole chapter about weight issues and body peace in my book, Live Beyond Your Label. One of the most common side effects of the psych meds I was on for 18 years is weight gain. And I believe (even though I’ve been off them for a dozen years) the metabolic impact has had long-term effects on my set point weight. The topic of weight is far more nuanced than a matter of calories in, calories out.

If you struggle with the number on the scale, just say no to being weighed at the doctor! There are other ways to measure metabolic health.

Reminder: if you’re a survivor of trauma like I am, the ability to choose what happens with your body is a huge aspect of the healing journey. Something as simple as saying “no thank you” to the weigh-in is empowering!

If you’re looking to restore your relationship with nutrition and see your cravings through a self-compassionate lens, while also optimizing your mental health, check out my new book Kitchen Therapy. Get on the list for my pre-order gifts by commenting KITCHEN!

I share this story about Rhett in the first part of my book, because it’s such a fitting analogy for stress and our bodies!

Maybe you’ve been to the doctor because you just don’t feel right.

The labs came back “normal.” You left with a pat on the back and a copay, still wondering why you feel this way.

Then something small happens. A big spill on the couch right when you’re heading out the door. An email that lands wrong. And suddenly you’re crying in the pantry, asking what is wrong with you.

Your body has been quietly carrying everything that came before it. That’s what being human looks like in a century with more micro-stressors than any generation before us.

In Kitchen Therapy, I walk you through one of the most overlooked ways to support a body carrying that load: the food-mood connection. What you eat gives every cell in your body information that can change how you feel.

You didn’t wake up depleted overnight.
It was a thousand small moments of choosing “push through” over “pause.”

Skipping the meal because there wasn’t time. Staying up later because it was the only quiet hour you had. Saying yes again because saying no felt selfish.

None of those choices were wrong on their own. But your body has been quietly paying the bill.

One week of chronic stress can burn through nearly half of your vitamin and mineral stores. Just two hours of emotional stress can shift your gut microbiome. Your body isn’t being dramatic. It’s telling the truth.

If you’re exhausted and you don’t know why, it might not be a faith problem or a discipline problem. It might just be a body that’s been running on empty for longer than anyone noticed, including you.

Comment JOURNAL and I’ll send you 45 of my favorite journaling prompts to help you run in with what your body is communicating.

Most of us were taught to treat each symptom on its own. A pill for the headache. Melatonin for the sleep. A deep breath for the irritability.

But some of the most helpful information about your body is sitting right on your period app!

When symptoms repeat at the same point in your cycle, that pattern points toward a root cause. That means you aren’t stuck managing one more random thing.

And if you’re in your 40s and those weeks are getting louder, you’re not imagining it. Shifting hormones can change how your body handles histamine, and that is something you can learn to support.

Start with three months of simple tracking. Jot down your cycle day and how you feel. The story often comes together faster than you’d expect.
And because your gut makes the enzyme that clears histamine, it’s one of the most practical places to begin.

Comment GUT CHECK and I’ll send you my free checklist with 12 simple habits for a calmer gut and a clearer mind. Pick one or two to start.

And don’t miss Episode 361 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast, which is all about hormone basics like this!

“He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” (Psalms 107:9). Whether your soul is longing for connection with your Creator or to be seen by your Savior, God has placed his Holy Spirit in you to guide you and council you when you don’t know which way to go.

Whether your cravings are physical, emotional, or spiritual, God has given your body cravings that indeed serve a purpose.

Ever had a sharp pain, a flare of reflux, or a sudden mood dip right around ovulation and wondered what in the world was going on?

I sit down with registered nurse and functional hormone coach Andrea Jones to go back to the basics of your cycle.

When estrogen spikes at ovulation, histamine can show up as cramping, bloating, reflux, or even mood shifts.

Your body isn’t being random. Those mid-cycle symptoms are pointing somewhere.

We cover progesterone, spotting, DUTCH testing, birth control, and simple first steps in the full episode.

To any teacher or parent (*cough cough* Mom) who told me to sit still to focus, it turns out that the fidgeting gives me the dopamine TO focus. My dopamine need is clear here. Playing with this rubber band helped me to stay focused on what I was reading, how slowly I was reading it, and using the right emphasis on words and phrases. Oh and trying to pronounce things like Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA). 🤪

Did you catch Episode 360 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast?

I so enjoyed my very real, open conversation with Lynnelle about her book But First, Honesty.

We talked about her journey through birth trauma, pregnancy loss, and a postpartum mental health crisis.

We also discussed why Lynnelle struggled with postpartum OCD in silence for nine months, how anxiety she’d carried since childhood set the stage for that season, the link between hormone imbalance, stress, and the nervous system, why emotional suppression is a real stressor on the body, what biblical lament actually looks like, how to prepare for the postpartum season, and why protecting your mind from news and social media is good stewardship.

You’ll also learn why being angry is not the same as sinning, how our view of God can be shaped by the authority figures from our childhood, and why the healing you want may not be the healing you need most.

It’s an incredible episode. Download wherever you get podcasts, and grab her book now!

I was diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and bipolar disorder by the time I was 18. I’ve been symptom-free for almost 20 years, medication-free for almost 13. I no longer meet the criteria for a diagnosis of depression or bipolar disorder. I feel more mentally healthy than ever before, even in perimenopause (and that’s saying something 🤪).

My mental health diagnosis wasn’t a negative prognosis.

They told me I’d always struggle. They were wrong.

Your brain can heal. I’m living proof of that.

God made a way where there was no way. I never take this journey for granted.

I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to share a portion of my story and hope this weekend at a Coffee Conversations event.
