Every runner has had a run where the legs feel like wet sandbags and the pace looks like a typo. Before you question your fitness, look at your sleep.

In one study, runners kept awake all night covered less ground in a 30-minute effort, and it felt just as hard. Same effort, but just a slower pace. Another found one sleepless night cut muscle protein synthesis by 18%. Training is the stress but sleep is where the adaptation happens.

Three non-negotiables to better sleep:

1. Same wake-up time, most days

2. Screens down before bed

3. Coffee cutoff 6+ hours before lights out

And on a rough-sleep day? Just adjust the run or go shorter, easier, or even a walk. Run by effort, not the watch.

Rest is part of the plan, not a reward. It’s part of the work.

Save this for your next rough morning.
