Real change takes two things: compassionate support and a thoughtful challenge at the right moment. Dr. L.A. Gress brings both.

Meet Dr. L.A. Gress, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS, CCTP, nationally certified licensed professional counselor, educator, researcher, and clinical supervisor at Mount North.

Dr. Gress works with clients navigating stress and adjustment, identity development and life transitions, relationships, and communication and conflict. She is an affirming provider for LGBTQIA+ clients and for gender, sexual, and relationship diversity, and her work is grounded in trauma-informed care. In addition to traditional therapy, she offers therapy intensives, solution focused brief therapy, and personal development and life strategy coaching.

Her approach is collaborative and evidence-informed. She helps clients understand the connections among their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, and life experiences, then build practical skills for change that lasts. Clients leave with greater self-awareness, healthier communication patterns, and more confidence in navigating whatever life puts in front of them.

She brings warmth, curiosity, and humor into every session.

Relatable. Insightful. Empowering.

Depression does not always look the way we expect it to.

It can look like irritability, numbness, exhaustion, or a person who keeps everything running while feeling empty inside. Because it does not match the picture most of us carry, it often goes unnamed for years.

This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week, and Thursday, October 8 is National Depression Screening Day. Mental Health America offers a free, anonymous online screening at mhanational.org. A screening is not a diagnosis, but it can be a clear first step toward a real conversation.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.

It is here.

Episode 4 of Unburdening is live now.

We are living longer than any generation before us. U.S. life expectancy has reached an all-time high. In one generation, average lifespan increased by nearly a decade.

But are we actually living those years well?

In Episode 4, Clare Welsh explores aging as a distinct stage of human development with its own vital work, and what happens culturally and personally when we skip that work in favor of chasing the appearance of youth. She looks at stories of people who embraced the final chapter of their lives with courage and authenticity, and the ripple effect they left behind.

She is joined by Emily Brick, LPC, licensed therapist at Mount North and specialist in gerontology, who shares what she has learned from years of working with adults 65 and older, and what aging well actually looks like in practice.

This episode will make you think differently about the second half of life.

Episode 4 of Unburdening drops this Monday.

We are living longer than any generation before us. Life expectancy in the U.S. has reached an all-time high. The number of Americans who have reached age 100 grew by 50% between 2010 and 2020 alone.

But Clare Welsh wants to ask a harder question than how long we are living.

In Episode 4, Clare explores what it actually means to age well in a culture that worships the appearance of youth and productivity above depth and meaning. She looks at old age not as a decline to manage but as a distinct developmental stage with its own vital tasks, and what it costs us personally and collectively when we ignore them.

She is joined by Emily Brick, licensed professional counselor at Mount North, who specializes in gerontology and brings years of experience working with adults 65 and older.

This one is for anyone thinking about the second half of life. And anyone who loves someone in it.

The therapeutic relationship is not just part of the process. For Jamie Fyock, it is the whole foundation.

Meet Jamie Fyock, MS, NCC, LPC, one of our newest team members at Mount North.

Jamie works with children, teenagers, adults, and families across a wide range of presenting concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, borderline personality, body image, anger, burnout, self-esteem, self-harm, emotion regulation, family conflict, and life transitions. She meets people where they are and walks alongside them as they build the awareness and skills to make the changes they actually want to make.

Jamie is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, one of the most evidence-based approaches available for building emotion regulation, stress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills. She also draws on CBT and person-centered therapy, tailoring her approach to what fits each individual client.

What guides everything she does is simple: her clients should feel safe, seen, and heard from the moment they walk in.

Empathetic. Calming. Understanding.

Jamie is now accepting new clients at Mount North. If you or someone you know is looking for a therapist who will genuinely show up for you, we would love to connect.

Medication myth we want to clear up this month:

"If medication works for you, you will need it forever."

Not true.

Medication decisions at Mount North are never permanent by default. They are made carefully, revisited regularly, and adjusted based on how you are actually doing, what has changed in your life, and what your goals are.

Some people use psychiatric medication for a defined period, like getting through a particularly difficult season, and then taper off with their prescriber's support when the time is right. Some people find that medication works best as a bridge while they build other skills and supports. Some people do benefit from longer-term use, and that is equally valid.

The difference between appropriate medication management and overprescribing is exactly what a thoughtful evaluation and ongoing relationship with a prescriber is designed to prevent.

The goal was never to medicate indefinitely. The goal was always to help you function well, on terms that make sense for your life.

If you have been avoiding starting a medication conversation because of this fear, it is worth having the actual conversation first.

Yes. And for a lot of people, the physical symptoms come first.

Anxiety is a full-body experience. It is not just worry. It is what happens when your nervous system activates its threat response and your body follows. Which means the symptoms of anxiety can show up in places that have nothing obvious to do with your mental state.

Some of the most common physical symptoms of anxiety include chest tightness or pressure, shortness of breath, a racing or pounding heart, nausea or stomach upset, headaches or migraines, muscle tension, jaw clenching, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping.

A lot of people with anxiety spend years in primary care trying to figure out what is wrong with their heart, their stomach, or their immune system before anyone asks about their mental health.

This is especially common for women, whose anxiety symptoms are more likely to be attributed to other causes or dismissed as stress.

If you have unexplained physical symptoms and have been cleared medically, anxiety is worth exploring.

A proper psychiatric evaluation looks at the full picture, including the physical ways anxiety shows up in your body, not just the psychological ones.

Supervision works best when it feels like someone is genuinely in your corner.

Meet Stephanie Onkst, PhD, LPC, NCC, Co-parenting Plan Mediator, clinical supervisor at Mount North.

Stephanie brings a clinical approach that is unlike anything most associates have experienced in supervision. She integrates music and the arts into her therapeutic work, drawing on the healing power of creative expression in ways that deepen both clinical skill and personal insight. Her doctoral training keeps her perspective sharp and current. Her Co-parenting Plan Mediator certificate gives her specialized expertise in one of the most emotionally complex areas of clinical work.

What makes Stephanie stand out as a supervisor is the way she holds space. She sees the uniqueness in every person she works with and builds an environment where growth and healing happen naturally. She will celebrate your wins with as much investment as she brings to the hard moments.

Loyal. Creative. Thoughtful.

Mount North clinical supervision starts at $250 per month, including individual and group supervision, board-compliant for LPC, LCSW, MFT, and PMHNP. Applications are open.

A lot of people describe their first few weeks of real anxiety treatment the same way.

Like being able to breathe for the first time. And then realizing they had been holding their breath for years.

Anxiety does not always announce itself. For a lot of people it just becomes the texture of everything.

Save this if it lands. Send it to someone who needs to hear it.
