🥛 Can little ones over 1 drink too much milk? Yes—and it can contribute to iron deficiency.

Cow’s milk can absolutely be part of a healthy diet after age 1, but more isn’t always better. 💙

When young children drink excessive amounts of milk, several things can work together to lower iron stores:

🥛 It fills them up. Too much milk can leave less room for iron-rich foods like meat, beans, lentils, eggs, and iron-fortified cereals.

🩸 Cow’s milk is very low in iron. When it makes up a large part of a child’s diet, meeting daily iron needs can become harder.

🧲 Dairy can affect iron absorption. Calcium may reduce iron absorption in the gut when consumed at the same time as iron.

🩺 Cow’s milk can also affect the GI tract. In infants—especially when introduced before 12 months—it can contribute to microscopic intestinal blood loss. Because blood contains iron, ongoing blood loss can contribute to iron deficiency. This is one reason cow’s milk should not replace breast milk or iron-fortified formula before age 1.
Over time, too little iron coming in, reduced absorption, and—in younger infants—possible microscopic GI blood loss can contribute to iron deficiency.
Iron is especially important in early childhood, when the brain and body are growing rapidly. 🧠🌱

Signs of iron deficiency may include:
😴 Fatigue or low energy
😣 Irritability
🍽️ Poor appetite
🧊 Pica, including craving ice or non-food items
📉 Concerns about growth or development

The goal isn’t to eliminate milk—it’s balance. 🥛🥦🥩🫘

Offer age-appropriate amounts of milk alongside a varied diet with iron-containing foods.

Excessive milk intake or inadequate iron-rich foods may also be reasons your healthcare provider recommends continued iron-deficiency screening.

🌿 A healthy habit can still become too much of a good thing. Talk with your healthcare provider about your child’s milk intake, nutrition, or whether iron testing is appropriate. 🩺💙

🍎 Historically, roughly 2 out of every 3 calories consumed by U.S. youth in this dataset came from ultra-processed foods.

That’s a striking number—and an important reason to look at the overall pattern of what our kids are eating. 🥤🍪🍟

A large U.S. analysis of nearly 34,000 children and young adults found that calories from ultra-processed foods increased from about 61% to 67% between 1999 and 2018 alone!

Higher ultra-processed food intake was also associated with diets containing:
🍭 More added sugar
🥖 More carbohydrates
🌾 Less fiber
🥚 Less protein
🥦 Lower amounts of many vitamins

Research continues to examine what this means for long-term health. A 2026 umbrella review found associations between higher ultra-processed food consumption and multiple adverse health outcomes🔬

This doesn’t mean that every food that comes in a package is “bad” or toxic.

💙 Processing exists on a spectrum, and convenience matters for real families 💙

🌱 A practical goal? Focus on the overall pattern: more fruits and vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, eggs, dairy, and other minimally processed foods when possible—without fear or perfection.

Small shifts can add up over time. 🫐🥕🥑

🌿 Creating a Healthier Home for Kids 🏡👶

Children encounter environmental chemicals through air, food, water, household dust & everyday products. Because their bodies and brains are developing, reducing avoidable exposures can help create a healthier home.

🧪 Endocrine Disruptors
Some phthalates & bisphenols, including BPA, can interfere with hormone signaling. Exposure to some endocrine-disrupting chemicals has been associated with effects on growth, reproductive development & metabolic health.

💨 VOCs & Indoor Air
Cleaners, air fresheners, paints & furnishings can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Some VOCs can irritate the eyes & respiratory tract. Reducing sources and improving ventilation can lower exposure.

🔬 Microplastics
Micro- & nanoplastics have been detected in human tissues, including the brain, liver & kidneys. A recent human study found substantially higher concentrations in brain tissue than in the liver or kidneys, and higher concentrations in brain & liver samples from 2024 compared with 2016 samples. Reducing plastic as much as possible is an excellent way to reduce potential sources of microplastic exposure.

🌱 Simple Low-Tox Swaps
• Choose glass or stainless steel, especially for hot food & drinks.
• Avoid heating food in plastic when possible.
• Choose fragrance-free cleaning, laundry & personal-care products.
• Minimize air fresheners & heavily scented products.
• Ventilate when cleaning, painting or remodeling.
• Wash hands before eating & reduce household dust.

📚 Need help choosing lower-tox products?
A few sources include EWG Healthy Living, Clearya & Think Dirty can help identify ingredients. Detox Me by Silent Spring Institute has practical exposure-reduction tips, while MADE SAFE provides a product directory.

💚 Small, practical swaps can reduce unnecessary exposures without being overwhelming. by trying to change everything at once.

🌿 One of the most evidence-based versions of holistic pediatrics is remarkably unglamorous 🌿

It looks like paying attention to the everyday factors that shape a child’s health:
😴 Sleep
🥦 Nutrition
🏃 Movement
☀️ Outdoor activity
🧠 Development & mental health
❤️ Family relationships
🌎 Environmental exposures
🦷 Oral health
💊 Thoughtful medication use
🩺 Preventive care

None of this requires rejecting conventional medicine. In fact, good holistic care should include it.

Holistic does not mean untreated. It does not mean ignoring symptoms, delaying necessary treatment, or substituting a “natural” remedy when a western medical treatment may be indicated instead. 🚫

Holistic pediatrics means looking beyond a single symptom to understand the whole developing child—their biology, development, daily routines, relationships, environment, and family context—and then considering the full range of appropriate, evidence-informed options. 🌱

Depending on the child and the condition, that might mean supportive care, nutrition or lifestyle changes, medication, therapy, environmental changes, watchful waiting, or several approaches together.

Sometimes an antibiotic is the right treatment. 💊

Sometimes watchful waiting is medically appropriate. ⏳

Sometimes the symptom needs treatment and sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, development, or environmental exposures deserve attention too. 🌿

The goal isn’t to be “natural” at all costs—or to use medication at all costs. The goal is to use the right care, for the right child, at the right time. 💙

✨ Holistic pediatrics doesn’t have to mean alternative medicine. It can simply mean refusing to reduce a whole developing child to one symptom, diagnosis, or prescription.
