This year, I married the love of my life .ruffolo. She has been a constant support to me and my life’s path. She has helped me to go to more vulnerable places within myself by being present and accepting me, even when I couldn’t do that for myself. She has shown me what it means to appreciate the small parts of life that are easy to overlook or take for granted.

I highly recommend finding a beautiful girl and marrying her.

What we do see in our practice, year after year, is that people fight themselves all holiday season long. You tell yourself that you shouldn’t have a slice of pie, but then you finally give in because you haven’t had pie in years, and then you feel terrible about yourself and how lazy and undisciplined you are, then you feel physically sick, and all of that self-loathing makes you have another piece of pie and feel even worse about yourself, and that vicious cycle keeps repeating all season long so by the time we hit the long, dark, cold February winter, you feel bloated, exhausted, and dispirited.

I used to play this game for years, feeling conflicted about my choices during the holiday season because I wanted to participate but didn’t want my health to be damaged in the process.

Until I stopped fighting with myself and leaned in. Now I can have my pie and eat it too.

So here is my strategy to survive the holiday season without falling to pieces:

1. Live a little bit: accept that you are going to be eating things that are off your diet and out of your routine, and that’s ok, because you are a normal person with feelings and it’s ok to enjoy pleasure food with your family sometimes.

2. Lean into food by making what you want the way you want it: if you want to eat apple pie a la mode but you typically avoid dairy and sugar, make your own pie with ingredients you feel good about. You don’t have to deny yourself anything. Just make what you want to eat the way you want to eat it.

3. Just chill out: you remember that holiday’s are supposed to be fun and relaxing right?

4. Follow our holiday protocol: we came up with a little protocol for our patients for holidays, travel, and any time you are eating off your diet. It includes taking digestive enzymes with meals, a binder in the evening before bed, an herbal laxative if needed to keep things moving, and detox routines like coffee enemas to help your liver out. This is a simple, tried and true way of gliding through time off your diet.

The root cause of all illness are false beliefs in the mind that cut us off from the infinite vitality that we have access to as children of God.

It’s easy to over physicalize your issue (trust me, I’ve been there). Thinking that you problem is just a deficiency in B vitamins is clean and tidy. And maybe you do have a deficiency in B vitamins that is really lowering your metabolic function.

In my experience, deficiencies and toxicities are usually small parts of a larger picture where mind-body issues are at the center.

I wouldn’t be posting and recommending nutrition, supplements, and detox to my patients and followers if I didn’t think they were important in our modern world where our food is devitalized and we are swimming in a soup of toxic exposures.

But when you heal a fractured mind-body connection, your body can absorb nutrients and eliminate toxins much more rapidly, you intuitively make better decisions for yourself daily, and you are able to take in the wonder of life in a way that was not possible before.

Gelatin in various forms is a food I lean on all day every day. It’s easy, safe, practical, and imparts many benefits.

Nature designs everything as a complete whole, especially food. Eating gelatin and organ meats with muscle meat means that you are eating a complete food as designed.

Finding solutions to common problems that are simple, cheap, easy, and practical is the name of the game for long term health.

Carrot salads serve as a basic binder and fiber for the gut to grab endotoxins that can recirculate in the blood stream while keeping the bowels moving.

I don’t do it everyday but I like to use it when I’m feeling a little bloated or a little backed up, especially after travel.

The feeling of endotoxin to me is a sensitive gut, foggy head, and depressive mood. For women, that would also probably include hormonal imbalances. If you feel these regularly, consider a daily carrot salad.

Many functional medicine doctors that say they are “holistic” are simply throwing supplements at people’s issues. In my experience, most health issues stem from the actions we take and thoughts we think on a day to day basis.

If you are chronically stressed everyday, unhappy, unfulfilled, skipping breakfast and lunch, getting no sunlight, not breathing properly, with no meaningful relationships in your life, THIS is the issue. Supplements are just a drop in the bucket if the foundation is not solid.

Supplements are a powerful tool, but only in the context of a daily life that is balanced and a mind that is working for you and not against you.

It’s been a labor of love, but .ruffolo and I finally accomplished our first sourdough loaf.

Every night, needing to feed it and refresh it and waking up in the morning to see what it looks like.

It’s kind of feels like we were raising a child. You don’t really know if you are doing it right and you hope it turns out alright.

I typically don’t recommend much gluten, nor consume it myself, but when you use ancient grains like einkorn that are lower in gluten and then you ferment it into sourdough, the grains are predigested making it much more nutrient dense and digestible.

Often times there is a big gap between what one says that want and what they are actually willing to do to get there.

I don’t believe that you NEED to do coffee enemas to be healthy. There are many ways up the mountain of health.

Part of the process with any change in your life, whether physical or mental, is coming to terms with what you want and what you are actually willing to do to achieve it.

If there is something that you are not willing to do, understanding why is a powerful self reflective practice.

There are many reasons why someone doesn’t want to do something. Maybe they think it’s stupid and is never going to work. Maybe they simply need more information to understand the cost benefit. Maybe it doesn’t fit with the kind of lifestyle they want to live, or their personal values.

Sometimes, it’s just because someone doesn’t want to deal with their own s**t.

Being honest with yourself, taking responsibility for your life, and making empowered decisions from that place is synonymous with becoming a whole integrated person.
