The Old World Apothecary The Old World Apothecary provides education & alternative products for mind, body and spirit. Together, we embrace the natural, the pure, and the vital . . .

In the quiet rhythm of life's sacred cycles, I walk alongside women as a traditional midwife, honoring the natural flow of womanhood during menopause. With gentle hands and an open heart, I nurture health through time-honored, natural approaches, listening closely to the whispers of the body and the wisdom of nature. As an herbalist, I craft remedies rooted in organic, chemical-free ingredients, loving made in small batches to preserve their purity and potency. My creations are a celebration of Nature's bounty, thoughtfully cultivated and ethically sourced to support wellness, balance and vitality. Deeply committed to the Earth that sustains us, I see my work as a sacred responsibility to protect our environment, to honor sustainable practices, and to leave a gentle footprint on our beautiful planet. My steps are guided by reverence for Nature's healing power and a passion to empower women on their unique journeys. Honoring the cycles of life and the Earth's timeless grace. Beyond my work, I find joy in tending my garden, where each plant is a gift from the Earth, nurtured with love and patience. I cherish my small flock of quail and tiny herd of chihuahuas, whose gentle (and sometimes noisy) presence reminds me of life's simple pleasures. I love being in the forest, surrounded by towering trees with their whispering leaves, and the soothing hum of nature. It is my sanctuary and source of inspiration. Most of all, my heart belongs to my family. Their love and support are the foundation of everything I do. My devotion to them fuels my passions to create, to heal, and to serve with kindness and care. In every moment I strive to live in harmony with nature, family, and the sacred cycles of life.

Sunday with Mullein

Yesterday, I wandered into the golden hush of summer fields, where the wild mullein stood like sentinels . . . tall and proud, their candle-like spires swaying gently in the breeze. With sun-warmed hands, I gathered their gifts . . . soft, silvery leaves that feel like nature’s velvet, and clusters of sunny yellow flowers glowing like drops of sunlight caught between petals.

The blossoms now rest in a jar of olive oil, mingled with garlic, becoming a gentle ear oil . . . an old-world remedy whispered down through time. The leaves, carefully tied and hung, will soon find their way into winter teas to soothe coughs, or into herbal smoke blends, offering their airy, earthy breath. And the tall, sturdy flower rods, once dried, will be dipped in beeswax to craft witch torches . . . flames that burn bright under the moon, just as our ancestors once did.

Harvesting mullein feels like gathering a little bit of magic. A plant of light, warmth, and resilience . . . always standing tall, even in the roughest soil.

From riverbank mornings to twilight on the dock . . . your hands deserve the same care you give to every cast and line.

Forged where water meets stone, Riverstone Remedy is a fisherman’s friend and a keeper of stories. Crafted with castor oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, lanolin, and almond oil infused with arnica and calendula and plantain, this balm dives deep to soothe hands that know the weight of nets, the sting of sun, and the whisper of wind.

Scented with patchouli, ho wood, frankincense, and the faintest splash of lime, it carries the grounding scent of riverbanks and driftwood, with just a hint of fresh-caught adventure.

This isn’t just a balm. . . it is a shield against the elements. Whether you’re tying lures, hauling in a catch, or simply tending the garden, Riverstone Remedy softens calluses, protects skin, and leaves behind a whisper of warmth and earth.

🌿 Poultices: The Herbal Band-Aid Magic 🌿

Long before adhesive strips and neon-colored ointments, there were poultices. . . simple, sacred medicine from the heart of the Earth. Known lovingly around here as herbal band-aids, poultices are nature’s way of drawing out what doesn’t belong and inviting healing where it’s most needed.

Just take your chosen herb: plantain, turmeric, dandelion, onion, ginger, yarrow (just to name a few) and place it in a bowl. Add a little hot water, just enough to coax the plants into a mash, and give it a good mash or muddle until it’s sticky and soft.

Apply this fresh, healing mash directly where it’s needed: a sting, a bite, a boil, a wound, even a place of infection or swelling. Cover gently with gauze and a bit of tape to hold the herbal wisdom in place. Let the plants do their ancient work.

One of my favorite poultices uses fresh lavender buds and aloe gel. Simply collect a few tablespoons of lavender buds and add to your mortar . . . use the pestle to smash them down a bit to release all the amazing healing oils, then slice open an aloe leaf and scrape the gel into the mortar along with the lavender. . . give a little mix with the pestle and apply directly to minor scrapes or burns. Cover with a gauze and secure into place however you see fit!

Whether you're tending to bee stings or burdens beneath the skin, remember. . . there’s a plant for that. 🌼

Draw it out. Heal it in. Trust the leaf.

This Morning in the Apothecary: A Love Note from the Heart of Home

I woke this morning nestled deep beneath my electric blanket, warm and toasty while the air in our bedroom swirled somewhere just shy of a snowstorm . . . my husband, ever the polar bear, had the thermostat set to “arctic expedition.”

Luna gave the signal it was time to rise, and with a wiggle of her tiny body, she led the way to wake her sisters. I passed Chris at the front door, where he was already lost in one of his endless projects . . . always building, always fixing, always caring for our little world in ways too quiet and noble to be fully captured in words. I kissed him in passing, a brief but grateful note in our morning song.

Then, into the kitchen I wandered, where coffee became fancy with the help of a generous swirl of whipped cream. I checked the wild lettuce infusion . . . stirred it gently . . . and was delighted to find the color deepening into a rich, decadent hue. The kind of beauty that feels like magic whispered into a pot on the stove.

Dogs underfoot, eager for scratches (and perhaps a lick of cream), quail softly murmuring in their coop . . . the morning mist hinted at a storm rolling in. And there I was: coffee in hand, infusion warming, heart brimming.

There is nothing quite like those soft, storm-sweet mornings . . . when love is felt in paw prints and toolboxes, in herbal brews and quiet rituals, in the way your home hums gently with life.

May your day hold something just as simple. Just as sacred.
