October is National Women's Small Business Month! 🎉
And we have plenty to celebrate!
Across the United States, women are building businesses, creating jobs, strengthening communities, and making significant contributions to our economy.
According to the Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Businesses Report, women own approximately 15.7 million businesses, employ 12.6 million people, and generate $2.8 trillion in annual revenue.
These are impressive accomplishments, and they're worth celebrating!
But there's another side to this success story.
Despite owning more than 40% of American businesses, women-owned businesses generate less than 5% of total U.S. business revenue.
And the disparities are even greater for Black women entrepreneurs. While Black women own a substantial share of women-owned businesses, they account for a disproportionately small share of the revenue those businesses generate.
We're building businesses. We're creating opportunities. We're contributing to our communities. But the economic rewards aren't equally distributed.
That's why National Women's Small Business Month is both a celebration of how far we've come and a reminder of how much work remains.
For me, this year's celebration is especially meaningful.
October marks 23 years since Qi To Wellness officially opened its doors!
For more than two decades, I've had the privilege of building a business around women's wellness, education, traditional healing practices, and womb-centered care.
As a Black woman who has owned and operated Qi To Wellness for 23 years, I'm proud to be part of the larger community of women entrepreneurs. I celebrate our accomplishments while recognizing the challenges that many women, particularly women of color, continue to navigate.
Twenty-three years in business represents a lot of learning, adapting, persistence, and commitment. And none of it happens in isolation.
Every client who books an appointment, every woman who attends a workshop, every person who purchases a product, makes a referral, or shares a recommendation contributes to the sustainability of a small business.
And that's something worth remembering beyond October.
Supporting women-owned businesses shouldn't be a seasonal gesture. It should be an ongoing recognition of the knowledge, skill, experience, and value women bring to the marketplace.
Book their services. Purchase their products. Attend their events. Recommend them to others. Invite them into professional networks and partnership opportunities.
Not as charity. Not simply because they're women.
But because their businesses have something valuable to offer.
Qi To Wellness is one of those businesses. I'm still here, still learning, still teaching, and still committed to supporting women through the many seasons of their lives.
To the many women entrepreneurs, whether you're just beginning or have been at this for decades, I celebrate you!
And to everyone who has supported Qi To Wellness over the years, thank you for being part of this journey.
Here's to celebrating women-owned businesses in October—and valuing and supporting their work every month of the year!
