It's been a moment since I shared some nuggets of inspiration. To be honest, I went under into hiding, cocooning into myself, licking the wounds of my current discombobulation.
I didn't expect to be so hit by the absence of my third and youngest child going to college and leaving a crater of emptiness in his wake. I didn't foresee how the ground beneath my feet would shake, leaving me out of wack, questioning everything, grieving. After 24 years of constant hands-on mothering, who am I without it?
Life's transitions do that to us. In the gap between what was and what will be, there's a hovering rootless in the unknown. Like one of those road runner cartoons, we are suspended in midair for that brief moment between free falling or flying. And although this identity shift asks us to redefine who we are, before we can answer, we need to be able to sit in this uncomfortable unknown, suspended, listening.
And part of this deep listening is allowing grief to move through, and letting it be an essential part of this equation, because in order to be who you're becoming, you have to shed who you no longer are, and this shedding can look like a lot of tears and heartache.
After almost two months of feeling the caretaking muscle memory rising in me, only to realize that I'm no longer needed (well, not in the old way), I'm slowly settling into a new and exciting reality. Who knows what adventures await. Waves of grief still wash over, but also waves of hope and curiosity and freedom.
And you? What big transitions are you moving through? What precipice are you standing on waiting to jump? Or have you jumped and still hovering midair desperately trying to stay afloat? And how does it feel?
If you ready to be supported in your process, let's connect and talk about. I would love to hear what's moving through you.
