I’m in a season of my life that’s physically and emotionally exhausting.

My elderly mother had some medical events two months ago and is no longer able to care for herself.

I found a nursing home nearby and spend time with her every day. It’s been hard seeing her slowly fade away.

I’m taking care of all of her mail and her finances. Our family is working through sorting her possessions, selling her car and eventually selling her home,

I’ve been exhausted and sleeping a lot while trying to keep my business going.

Then the water came. After two weeks of almost continuous rain, the chimney started leaking. I had to sleep in the spare room. The bed wasn’t comfortable and I woke up with a sore back every day.

I’m slowly putting my life back together. Taking better care of my health.

My landlord was able to repoint the chimney and has started patching the wall.

I’ve hired a cleaning service to put my house back in order.

I’ve been able to see a few more clients.

Your home and your life are not separate. As you work on one, you’re automatically working on the other.

If you feel stuck in your life, start making small improvements to your home to support the improvements you want to make in your life.

My mother is in a nursing home now. Just a couple of months ago, she was able to be in her own home and take care of herself.

We’re looking at her things, trying to decide what to keep. It’s hard being there. It still feels like she is just in the other room. That she just stepped out for a moment.

No matter how much you try to prepare for this time, it’s still so hard. She’s still alive, but there’s already grief for the life she’s no longer living, for the emptiness in her home.

I’ve found that choosing the special things that she loved or things that she made keep the essence of her life with me.

The braided rug she made. The apron that she cross-stitched. The spice cabinet that sat in her kitchen. Bowls, teapots, measuring cups. The little squirrel planter that sat on the windowsill.

It can feel like you’re losing your loved one when you let their things go.

But if you keep the most meaningful and use or display them regularly, that part of them will always be with you. And eventually will be happy memories instead of grief.

I haven't been on here much lately. We moved my 93-year-old mother to a nursing home about a month ago after a series of falls.

While she was still in her home, she wouldn’t let me clean the fridge or go through food in the cupboards. She insisted it was still good. Part of that was distorted thinking from mild dementia and part of it was denial that she could no longer manage. She had always been a fiercely independent woman. I didn’t push it. Just discreetly removed food in the fridge that might make her sick. I didn’t want her last years to be marred with arguments.

I’ve been going through the cupboards and fridge. Most things were current or expired within the last two-three years. But I did find a couple of tins spices from 1981 and 1983 as well as a package of 15-year-old raisins and some five-year-old cans of tuna.

As I work, I keep seeing her in garden, picking and canning tomatoes or cooking big Sunday dinners for extended family. Each package of food tells a story. She bought that can of tuna intending to make tuna noodle casserole, then gradually lost her ability to cook and could only reheat premade soups and sandwiches. It sat there in case she ever wanted to make that casserole again, even though that became increasingly impossible.

I can work for about half an hour before the sadness becomes overwhelming. Maybe my mother wasn’t prepared to feel that sadness, either. So, she chose to put it off for another day. I’ll probably never know.

When you’re frustrated with your elderly parents for not being able to let things go, take a step back. Listen to their stories. Honor their memories and emotions. Offer help respectfully. Respect their dignity. Be patient. Acknowledge the emotions that you both are feeling. It will make a difficult process smoother and less stressful for everyone.

As I was looking through the clothing racks, I found myself getting more and more tired.

My legs felt heavy and achy, like I’d been running a race.

I managed to find one pair of jeans that fit me and then I had to leave before I felt worse.

As I’ve worked with energy, I’ve become very sensitive to it. I used to love browsing thrift stores and antique stores, but now I can’t stay more than 20-30 minutes.

The items in the stores hold hundreds of different people’s energy. My energy field takes it on and I soon feel drained.

I have to clear the energy from myself and whatever I’ve brought home as soon as I leave the store.

Even if you’re not sensitive to energy like I am, you should practice energetic hygiene when you’re shopping second hand. Be sure to clear your energy and the things you purchase right after you get home. Clothing can be washed. Other items should be smudged.

When your elderly parents refuse to discard expired food, it’s not stubbornness.

It’s hard for them to accept that they’re not able to manage their homes the way they used to.

And they’re probably embarrassed for you to see it. So they tell you everything is fine. No need to help them declutter their cabinets or their fridge. In their minds, they’re still the parents, taking care of you. They’re not ready to give up that role.

And if you do manage to persuade them to look at things with you, they often resist throwing expired food away. Out of embarrassment, out of engrained habits of saving, not being wasteful.

I’ve been through this with my 93-year-old mother. While she was still in her home, she wouldn’t let me go through the food. Insisted it was still good. I didn’t push it. Just discreetly removed food in the fridge that might make her sick. I didn’t want her last years to be marred with arguments.

Now she’s in a nursing home and I’ve started going through the cupboards and fridge. That tin of Tones spices is from 1983! It’s been emotional going through her things and I’m just doing a bit at a time. Sitting with my feelings for a day or two before I begin again.

I’ve created a self-paced video course to guide you through the decluttering process, especially the emotions that come up.

If emotions, stories and beliefs are keeping you stuck, purchase my course in my Instagram bio or the link on Facebook.

Anyone else feel like they’re part of the Lemony Snicket series?

The astrology and energy is intense right now.

I’ve never had so many accidents and things breaking down at once. Phew!

It’s got to get better soon.
