Your cervix is NOT a progress report.
4 cm for hours doesn’t mean labor isn’t working. It just means you're likely still in early labor which takes time.
And going from 4 to 8 cm quickly doesn’t mean you did something “right.” It just means body and baby are ready for active labor.
Cervical dilation is just ONE piece of what’s happening during labor. Baby may be rotating and descending.
The cervix may be thinning and moving forward.
The body may simply be preparing for a period of faster change.
Labor also doesn’t always progress at a predictable or perfectly steady pace.
Hearing “you’re still only ___ centimeters” can feel discouraging, but often, plenty is happening.
As doulas, we can help families understand the bigger picture, ask questions, change positions, rest when possible, and remember that one cervical check doesn’t tell the whole story.
