The founder of the Nurse Practitioner profession !

In the rural towns of 1950s Colorado, Loretta Ford saw something that broke her heart: children falling sick with no doctor for miles, families left with nowhere to turn. She was a public health nurse, and she knew the skill to help was already in her hands she just needed the world to let her use it.

In 1965, Loretta partnered with pediatrician Henry Silver and did something unheard of: she created the very first nurse practitioner program, training nurses to diagnose and treat children directly. The medical establishment pushed back hard. Critics said nurses had no business doing a doctor's job. Loretta refused to back down.

She believed nurses were capable of so much more than anyone gave them credit for and she proved it. Today, over 355,000 nurse practitioners across America carry forward what she started, bringing care to families who would otherwise go without.

Loretta Ford didn't wait for permission. She saw a need and became the answer. That's not just nursing that's heroism.
