Wednesday Warrior - Realizing Success

This week we recognize Greg Sisk - a guy who proves every day that a great attitude, a kind heart, and a good sense of humor can take you far! If there’s work to be done around the house, chances are Greg is already halfway through the job before anyone asks. Whether it’s tackling yard work, bringing in wood for the stove, or lending a helping hand wherever needed, Greg is always ready. After all, as Greg likes to remind everyone, β€œI’m strong, so I can do that job!” And honestly, he's not wrong!

Greg is known for his big heart and friendly personality. He loves chatting about music, scary movies, and his latest finds from yard sales and discount stores, which happen to be some of his favorite places to explore. He also enjoys walking around his neighborhood to stay active and get some exercise.

What makes Greg especially inspiring is that he doesn't let life's challenges stand in the way of his independence. He works hard to do things on his own while appreciating the supports that help him live the life he wants. And what does that life include? Plenty of laughter, joking with friends, staying safe and healthy, and most importantly, living with his sponsor, which Greg proudly says is β€œthe best.” In fact, Greg often says he's pretty lucky to have the life he has, and it's easy to see why.

Greg also enjoys learning new things and isn't afraid to try something different. One recent adventure? Dyeing his own hair! Not only did he take on the challenge himself, but it turned out fantastic. Great job, Greg! One of the best parts of visiting Greg is simply sitting down and talking. Conversations with him feel less like work and more like catching up with an old friend. He has a way of making people smile, laugh, and feel welcome.

Congratulations, Greg, on being our Wednesday Warrior! Thank you for your hard work, kindness, independence, and the joy you bring to those around you. Keep being you because the world could always use more Gregs! πŸ’™

Today we recognize Rebecca Chan – Danville's August Hall of Fame Winner. Winner. Rebecca has been a valued member of the Support Services of VA, Inc. family since March 2023!

πŸ’™ A Special Celebration for a Growing Family πŸ’™

Today, the SSVA family had the joy of celebrating the upcoming birth of Jer'Qualle's son with a baby shower filled with love, laughter, and excitement for the journey ahead. πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ

Jer'Qualle, we are incredibly proud of the growth you've shown during your time with SSVA. Watching your professional development, leadership, and dedication to those you support has been inspiring. It has been equally meaningful to see you embrace this new chapter and grow into the wonderful mother you are becoming.

Thank you to everyone who helped make today's celebration so special. We are excited to welcome the newest member of the SSVA family later this month and can't wait to meet him! πŸ’™βœ¨

Wednesday Warriors - Realizing Success.

This week we'd like to introduce Crystal Everett, Maya Smith, and Kat Coorough. They are all Direct Support Professionals wrapping up orientation and headed off to their training shifts this week. They had a blast during orientation and are eager to get to their sites.

Lets Meet them!

Crystal Everett is pictured on the left:
Well I just wanted to say that the training with Miss Camille was absolutely Amazing and definitely Engaging! I am very impressed how SSVA is very organized and dedicated to those that we serve! I can’t wait to meet the wonderful people that we support!

Maya Smith is pictured in the center:
I was born and raised on the Eastern Shore. I graduated high school with an advanced diploma and a 4.0 GPA! I attended and graduated from Virginia State and earned my bachelor's degree in business management. On my spare time I enjoy crocheting, writing poetry and singing.

Kat Coorough is pictured on the right:
I grew up in Montana and moved to Virginia Beach right after graduating high school and fell in love with the people and culture here; VB has been my home for almost 20 years now. I spent more than a decade working in the corporate world before deciding to take a leap into something completely new as a DSP. I love connecting with people and am very excited to get back to meaningful, people-centered work! I previously spent 4 summers working as a summer camp counselor and 7–8 years helping lead a mentorship group for young girls which included community activities, teaching life skills, and really just showing up for them. Outside of work I love cooking, music, DIY projects, being active, visiting my family in MT, and watching true-crime shows with my cat Cheeto lol. I’m excited to learn and grow in the DSP field and so happy to be part of the SSVA team.

Welcome to the SSVA family - we are so glad you chose to join us! You are inspirations! πŸ’š

Wednesday Warrior - Realizing Success

This week we celebrate our Hampton Roads Administrative Assistant, Ta'kera Barkley!

She is originally from Detroit, Michigan, and later moved to Georgia to attend Gordon State University, where she majored in Pre-Law. Life eventually brought her to Norfolk, Virginia, where she relocated to be closer to family, something she values deeply.

As a proud mom of two beautiful daughters, Ta'kera is all about family and creating meaningful memories with her loved ones. When she's not managing the office and keeping things organized, you'll likely find her enjoying a good book, adding another treasure to her unique cup collection, or treating herself to her favorite food... chicken!

Ta'kera joined us in May 2026 and since then she has shown that she has a positive spirit, dedication, and willingness to help which all contribute to making her a valued member of SSVA. πŸ’™
