SPIRITUAL GROWTH ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE. SOMETIMES IT'S ABOUT LOOKING WITHIN OURSELVES. 🌱
Sunday taught me something about expectations.
I was surrounded by four grandchildren, all needing something at once. One crying, one needing help, another getting hurt. Complete chaos!
And there I was, becoming increasingly frustrated with someone because he wasn't stepping in the way I thought he should.
In my frustration, I found myself wanting him to just go home.
But later, when everything settled, I was able to look at the situation with a little more clarity.
Was he really doing something wrong? Or was I expecting him to be someone I had created in my own mind?
I realized I was measuring him against the example my own father had set as a grandfather. I was expecting him to recognize my needs without ever communicating them.
And that's where the spiritual lesson came in.
How often do we create expectations of others based on our own experiences, beliefs, and understanding of how things SHOULD be?
Then we become frustrated, disappointed, or even resentful when they don't meet those expectations.
My need for help was real. But so was my responsibility to communicate it.
Spiritual growth is learning to recognize the difference between what someone is actually doing and the story we've created about what they should be doing.
Sometimes the peace we're searching for comes when we stop trying to change others and start questioning our own expectations.
And that, my friends, is what self-awareness looks like.
