🧠 WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA?

It’s a chronic condition involving altered pain processing in the nervous system. Common symptoms include:

💜 Widespread pain and tenderness

💜 Persistent fatigue

💜 Sleep disturbances

💜 Brain fog and difficulty concentrating

🌿 CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP?

Research suggests acupuncture may provide short-term relief of pain and improve quality of life for some people with fibromyalgia, although study findings are mixed and longer-term benefits remain uncertain.

In my clinical practice, fibromyalgia is a condition I treat frequently. My approach focuses on the individual—not just the diagnosis.

✨ THE TAKEAWAY

Fibromyalgia is complex. Treatment should be, too.

Acupuncture may be one helpful part of a comprehensive care plan that also addresses sleep, movement, stress, and overall well-being.

💜 Your pain deserves to be heard, understood, and taken seriously.

🧠💜 MIGRAINES: MORE THAN JUST A HEADACHE!

Did you know that approximately 39 MILLION Americans and 1 BILLION people worldwide live with migraine?

That’s roughly 1 in 8 people in the U.S.!

Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause debilitating pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

🌿 CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP?

THE RESEARCH SAYS YES—ESPECIALLY FOR PREVENTION!

🔬 A 2016 Cochrane systematic review analyzed 22 clinical trials involving 4,985 participants.

Researchers found:

💜 41% of patients receiving acupuncture experienced at least a 50% reduction in headache frequency, compared with 17% receiving usual care alone.

✨ THE TAKEAWAY?

Acupuncture may be a valuable option for reducing migraine frequency, particularly as part of a preventive treatment plan.

Because fewer migraine days can mean more days spent enjoying life!

🧠💜 STRESSED? YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM NEEDS A MOMENT.

We’ve spent this week exploring the vagus nerve, its role in the body, and how acupuncture may influence autonomic nervous system activity.

Now let’s talk about what YOU can do to support your nervous system every day!

🌿 3 SIMPLE WAYS TO ENCOURAGE RELAXATION

🫁 1. Slow, diaphragmatic breathing

Breathe gently into your lower ribs and abdomen rather than taking rapid, shallow breaths. Slow, comfortable breathing can help reduce physiological arousal.

💨 2. Lengthen your exhale

Try inhaling for 4 seconds and exhaling gently for 6. Don’t force it—find a rhythm that feels comfortable. A slower breathing pace may support relaxation and influence heart-rate variability.

🚶‍♀️ 3. Move mindfully

Walking, gentle yoga, stretching, or simply stepping outside can help ease tension and support emotional well-being.

💜 HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART:

You don’t need to wait until you’re completely overwhelmed to practice regulating your stress response.

Small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference.

And while these practices aren’t a magic switch for the vagus nerve, they’re practical ways to support your overall nervous system health.

✨ Your nervous system is always listening. Give it a little kindness.

🔖 Save this for the next time life feels overwhelming.

🧠💜 ACUPUNCTURE & THE VAGUS NERVE

Did you know acupuncture may influence the same nervous system pathways involved in stress, digestion, and heart rate?

Your vagus nerve is a major communication highway between your brain and body, helping regulate your body’s “rest and digest” response.

🔬 Two fascinating acupuncture points:

📍 PC6 (Neiguan) — Located on the inner forearm. Commonly used for nausea and traditionally for stress and anxiety. Researchers are studying its effects on autonomic regulation.

📍 ST36 (Zusanli) — Located on the front-outer lower leg, below the knee. Preclinical research suggests stimulation here may influence vagal signaling and inflammatory pathways.

✨ Why does this matter?

Modern neuroscience is beginning to uncover how acupuncture may interact with the nervous system. Much of the detailed vagus nerve research is still preliminary, but the possibilities are fascinating!

💜 Ancient medicine. Modern science. A connection worth exploring.

🧠💜 MEET YOUR VAGUS NERVE!

Did you know you have a nerve that connects your brain to your heart, lungs, digestive system, and other organs?

Meet the vagus nerve—one of the most fascinating communication pathways in the human body!

Its name comes from the Latin word for wandering, and it certainly lives up to that name.

🌿 WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Your vagus nerve plays an important role in:

❤️ Heart rate: Helping regulate your heartbeat.

🫁 Breathing: Participating in communication between your lungs and brain.

🧠 Stress regulation: Supporting the parasympathetic nervous system—often called your body’s “rest and digest” system.

🍽️ Digestion: Helping coordinate gut movement and communication between your digestive tract and brain.

💜 Brain-body communication: Carrying sensory information from your internal organs back to your brain.

HERE’S WHERE IT GETS REALLY INTERESTING…

Researchers are investigating how acupuncture may influence autonomic nervous system activity, including pathways involving the vagus nerve.

Some studies suggest that stimulation at certain acupuncture points may engage specific neural circuits, although much of the detailed mechanistic research is still preclinical.

And that’s exactly what we’ll explore later this week!

✨ THE TAKEAWAY

Your nervous system is constantly communicating with your body—even when you’re not consciously aware of it.

Understanding that connection can change how we think about stress, digestion, and whole-body health.

💜 SAME COMPLAINT. DIFFERENT PATIENT. DIFFERENT TREATMENT.

One of the things I love most about practicing acupuncture is that no two patients are exactly alike.

Two people can walk into my office with the same complaint—neck pain, migraines, insomnia, digestive issues—and walk out having received completely different treatments.

Why? Because I don’t just treat the diagnosis. I treat the whole person sitting in front of me.

I want to know more than where it hurts.

How are you sleeping?
What’s happening in your life?
How are you moving?
What makes your symptoms better or worse?
And what else might be contributing? Diet ? Lifestyle ?

Sometimes treatment involves acupuncture alone. Other times, I may incorporate dry needling, cupping, movement, supplements or other techniques depending on your needs.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

And that’s exactly how I believe healthcare should be. 💜 Treat the root cause not just the symptom.

Same diagnosis doesn’t always mean the same treatment.

🔖 Save this if you appreciate individualized healthcare.

💜 Share it with someone who thinks acupuncture is just about putting needles where it hurts!

🤧 ALLERGIES AGAIN?

Sneezing. Stuffy or runny nose. Itchy, watery eyes. Sinus pressure.

If seasonal allergies have you reaching for the tissues every time you step outside, you’re definitely not alone.

Allergic rhinitis happens when your immune system reacts to something that is normally harmless—such as pollen, grasses, mold, or dust mites—and triggers an inflammatory response.

And yes… acupuncture may help.

Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and improve quality of life for some people. It can be used as a complementary treatment alongside conventional allergy care, not as a replacement when medication or medical evaluation is needed.

One thing I always emphasize: acupuncture isn’t about simply sticking a needle near your nose. Treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, your health history, and how your body is presenting.

🌿 Because sometimes enjoying the changing seasons shouldn’t require carrying an entire box of tissues with you.

💜 Know someone who spends allergy season sneezing their way through the day? Share this with them.

🦶 THAT FIRST STEP OUT OF BED SHOULDN’T HURT.

If you’ve ever stepped out of bed in the morning and felt that sharp, stabbing pain in your heel, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the things I’ve been treating A LOT lately.

And here’s something many people don’t realize: I’m not necessarily going to treat only your foot.

The plantar fascia doesn’t function in isolation. Tightness and altered mechanics through the calf and Achilles can influence the load placed on the heel and plantar fascia—which is why I may be looking and treating farther up the leg, too.

Depending on what I find, treatment may include acupuncture, dry needling, and other techniques to address pain, muscle tension, and contributing movement patterns. Let’s not forget about nutrition and hydration !!

Because once again…

💜 Where it hurts isn’t always where the whole problem starts.

If your first few steps in the morning have become something you dread, it may be time to do something about it.

💜 SU***DE PREVENTION MONTH | SUPPORTING OUR VETERANS

For many veterans, coming home doesn’t mean the battle is over.

PTSD can affect far more than mental health. It may show up as anxiety, hypervigilance, disrupted sleep, chronic pain, irritability, difficulty relaxing, or feeling as though the nervous system simply can’t turn off.

Acupuncture is not a replacement for mental health treatment or crisis care, but it can be used as part of a comprehensive approach to supporting veterans living with PTSD and related symptoms.

As a VA Community Care Network provider, caring for our veteran community is something I am deeply passionate about.

I’m also proud to be involved with The Joel Fund a local organization supporting veterans and their families. Su***de prevention and veteran mental health are conversations we need to continue having—not just during one month of the year.

If you’re a veteran receiving VA care, ask your VA healthcare team whether you may be eligible for acupuncture through Community Care.

💜 And please remember: asking for help is a sign of strength.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988. Veterans can press 1 after calling 988 or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Key Findings

Baseline pain levels were similar across all groups, averaging approximately 7 out of 10.

At one month, average pain scores decreased to 3.8 with usual care and 3.2 with acupuncture plus usual care. While the acupuncture group reported slightly lower pain, the difference did not reach the study’s predefined threshold for a clinically meaningful improvement.

Overall pain reduction was also comparable between groups—approximately 44% with usual care versus 49% with acupuncture—with similar outcomes in physical function and quality of life.

One notable difference was patient satisfaction. Participants who received acupuncture reported significantly greater satisfaction with their overall treatment following the emergency department visit, averaging 7.8 out of 10 compared with 6.4 out of 10 for usual care.

Importantly, acupuncture was shown to be safe and well tolerated, with only mild, temporary adverse effects and no serious complications.

A Duke University trial reveals acupuncture integrated into emergency care provides safe, multimodal relief and high satisfaction for acute pain.
