Stella Maris Yoga Stella Maris is a space of wellness, community, and healing where every person feels seen, supported, and empowered. I am often asked what Stella Maris means.
(1)

We are more than a yoga studio — we’re a movement toward mindful living, authentic connection, and finding your inner strength. The name Stella Maris is so very personal to me. It is a way that I can honor my late mother and include her mission, her purpose, her light, her love for all into our space and allow others to feel that warmth as well. Stella Maris means female protector/guiding spirit at sea or star of the sea. My mother loved starfish because she loved the poem about Starfish. She lived every day of her life letting anyone she came in contact with, her friends, family and those she helped along the way, know that they matter, they were important and they are valued. No one was ever beneath her. Ever.

My mother, Officer Janice A. Cunningham, had a long list of amazing accomplishments during a time when women weren’t encouraged to be police officers, domestic violence/sexual trauma was incredibly misunderstood and the victims/families had very little resources or available information at their fingertips. When my mother became a police officer she ignored all the criticism she received as the first female officer hired in her town because she had a greater purpose to fulfill. She cared and wanted to make a difference in the world. She started H.U.G.S in 1995 (Help Us Get Safe) which was designed to support and advocate for victims of Domestic Violence and their families as well as provide for those families during their times of hardship. H.U.G.S. is still active today. She served as a DARE officer in the East Bridgewater school system and was loved by both students and faculty alike. She brought so much joy and positivity into the schools and was known for the jingle bells she would wear and give to students during the holidays. She also became the first female President for the DARE Program in Massachusetts. She worked closely with local Domestic Violence programs such as Health Imperatives (located on the South Shore of Massachusetts). She worked tirelessly under the cover of night to help families escape and provide safety from Domestic Violence. She started the Giving Tree program our hometown to make sure no child went without gifts during the holidays regardless of their religion. She also was a 10th degree blackbelt in Kempo Karate, teaching alongside my father at their studio. Her classes? Tots, Childrens’ Karate and Women’s Self Defense of course! She did this without any want of praise or accolade. She wanted nothing ever other than to let people know they matter. To myself and my brothers she was our mom. She taught us empathy, compassion, strength & humility. She made the best of every day, every adversity, loved every holiday and whose laugh felt like home to me. She was my best friend. After she passed my father passed down her jewelry boxes. As I went slowly through each drawer, each cubby I found countless starfish. There were starfish in every space gleaming back at me reminding me of her love & that her work is not done. While I cannot even come close to helping others in the way my mother did, I wanted to create a space that honored her work and every single soul that walks into our space. From the students to the teachers, I hope to create a space where people know they matter, they can be themselves, feel empowered, safe and strong in who they are meant to be. I cannot change the world but I hope to make a difference to at least one person so they can do the same and so on.

Before you scroll to the next thing, take a small pause.

Notice your shoulders.
Unclench your jaw.
Let your hands soften.
Take an easy breath.

There’s room for moments like this throughout your day—even when you can’t make it to your mat.

Save this little reset for a busy afternoon.

To our friends and the friends we haven't met yet...

I was told I wasn't smart enough to run a business. I opened Stella Maris Yoga anyway.

I have ADHD, and yoga was the first thing that quieted my busy mind. It helped me find my voice, trust myself, and keep going through life's hardest moments.

Over six years, I've watched strangers become friends - a community that welcomes with open arms and supports one another through it all. That's what I hoped to create: a space that felt like home to all.

Thank you for supporting this small, local studio, for honoring my mother's legacy, and for making this girl's dream a reality. And thank you to our incredible instructors for making Stella Maris the warm, encouraging space it is.

If you're looking for a place to move, grow, feel supported and at home - drop on in to say hello. We'll meet you where you are. 💗

👉 New to the studio? Message us HELLO for our welcome offer.

Introducing THE EVOLVING PRACTICE
Explore. Refine. Reimagine.

I'm excited to introduce something new at Stella Maris Yoga & Wellness!

The Evolving Practice is a three-part continuing education series created for yoga teachers who love what they do and recognize that there's always more to explore, discover, and learn along the way.

Whether you're newly certified or have been teaching for years, this series is an opportunity to step back into the role of student, exchange ideas with fellow instructors, and find fresh inspiration for the classes we teach.

Through movement, discussion, creative exploration, and collaboration, we'll revisit familiar concepts, explore new perspectives, and continue building upon our knowledge and experience.

Our Three Workshops:

Part One — The Art of Purposeful Sequencing
📅 November 14 | 11 AM–1 PM
Meaningful repetition, progressive movement, thoughtful transitions, and creative approaches to sequencing.

Part Two — Beyond Asana: Philosophy, Breath & Intention
📅 December | Date TBA
Weaving yogic philosophy, breathwork, and intention into the practice.

Part Three — Teaching On & Off the Mat
📅 January | Date TBA
Observation, verbal cueing, thoughtful adjustments, and responsive teaching.

Each workshop is two hours and offers 2 Yoga Alliance Continuing Education contact hours, for a total of 6 hours across the complete series.

Facilitated by Traci Lapanna
E-RYT 200 | CYT 500 | YACEP
Owner, Stella Maris Yoga & Wellness

Early Bird Pricing:
Individual Workshop: $55 (regularly $65)
Complete Three-Part Series: $145 (regularly $175)

Early Bird pricing through October 31.

You can join us for one workshop or all three!

My hope is that this series brings teachers together to share what we've learned, explore new possibilities, and leave feeling inspired in our own teaching.

Because no matter how long we've been teaching, we are always students.

Registration for Part One is now open!

Space is limited.

Tonight at 6pm — Beginner Yoga at Stella Maris Yoga & Wellness in Wareham 🌿

If you've been thinking about trying yoga but weren't sure where to start — tonight is a really gentle place to start.

We're a small, independent studio, not a big gym. A warm community led by welcoming, educated instructors who learn your name, remember your story, and make space for you to rest when you need to.

You don't need to know what you're doing. You do not need to be flexible. You just need to show up as you are today.

We practice three things:
Movement to feel at home in your body.
Rest so your nervous system can catch up.
Connection with yourself and each other.

We'd love to see you tonight.
