What makes a product a good choice for a clean, sustainable, and holistic salon?
For us, it is about a lot more than whether the bottle says “clean.”
We take a thoughtful approach to the professional products we use because our stylists are working with these products every day, our clients are experiencing them during their appointments, and many of the ingredients eventually make their way into our water and environment.
That means we look closely at things like silicones, fragrance, and aerosol propellants when evaluating the products we bring into the salon.
With silicones, we consider both how they perform on the hair and their environmental impact. Some silicones can create buildup on the hair, while certain types are persistent in the environment. Since sustainability is one of our core values, we think about the entire lifecycle of the ingredients we use.
Fragrance is a little more nuanced. We generally prefer products with minimal or thoughtfully formulated fragrance, particularly because some people are sensitive to scents.
But we do not believe that every fragrance is automatically a problem. Our dip premium hair care shampoo and conditioner bars are a good example. They have a subtle, inoffensive fragrance, and we have built a relationship with the owner and taken the time to vet the brand and its products to make sure they align with our mission.
And then there are aerosols. Many aerosol products use propellants such as propane, butane, and isobutane, which are released into the air when the product is sprayed.
For us, it makes sense to consider what our stylists and clients are breathing in, especially when a product is being used repeatedly in a salon environment. That's why you will always see us reaching for a pump spray instead.
None of this is about fear or declaring every ingredient we avoid “toxic.” It is about asking better questions and making thoughtful choices.
That's the approach we take to clean beauty and low-tox salon care. We are committed to doing the homework, staying curious, and continuing to make better choices for our clients, our team, and the planet.
