We’re so grateful for The Washington Home’s continued support of hospice access and education for DC’s older adults and most vulnerable populations. Thank you for helping make a meaningful difference in our community.
“For individuals experiencing homelessness who do not have stable housing or a 24-hour caregiver to support them at home, accessing hospice care can be especially challenging,” said Kowshara Thomas, Executive Director of Joseph’s House. “This funding will allow us to provide a safe, supportive home and the medical respite care necessary to help individuals access hospice services in an environment where they are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. At Joseph’s House, we believe everyone deserves comfort, connection, and compassionate care at the end of life, regardless of their housing status or circumstances.”
Older adults often face significant barriers to accessing the comfort and support of hospice care, including limited caregiver support at home, financial and cultural challenges, and insufficient access to healthcare providers with specialized end-of-life training.
The Washington Home is proud to announce a $328,000 investment to launch the Hospice Access Collaboration. In partnership with four organizations, this initiative will expand inpatient hospice and medical respite capacity for 25 patients while strengthening the knowledge and skills of 200 local healthcare workers in providing end-of-life care.
“Increasing access to hospice care requires addressing the barriers that prevent patients from receiving these services,” said Crystal Carr Townsend, CEO of The Washington Home. “By bringing partners together to reduce financial, housing, and caregiver-support barriers while building the healthcare workforce’s knowledge and capacity, this initiative will help more DC residents access quality end-of-life care with dignity and comfort.”
💥 Thank you to our amazing partners working every day to support older adults across our community: Capital Caring Health, Forest Hills of DC, Joseph's House DC, and Sibley Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Together, the collaboration will create a stronger network to meet the growing demand for accessible, highly skilled end-of-life care delivered with dignity and compassion. 🌻
