9.7 million infections. 50,800 deaths. Every year.

That’s the estimated U.S. toll of the drug-resistant bacteria and fungi in CDC’s 2026 AR Threats Report.

The report names 19 pathogens as urgent, serious or concerning threats. Six more are on a Watch List. It’s now a website, so the data will be updated more often.

Infection preventionists see this work up close. Now you have the numbers to back it.

The future of infection prevention is already taking shape.

AI-assisted surveillance can help identify emerging risks. Whole genome sequencing can determine whether infections from different patients are genetically related. Automated monitoring and real-time dashboards can help teams recognize trends and respond more quickly.

Technology doesn’t replace the knowledge and judgment of infection prevention professionals. It gives them new ways to investigate outbreaks, anticipate risks, and protect patients.

As these tools continue to evolve, IPs will remain at the center, combining innovation with clinical expertise and human insight.

As a final event for the week, gather with your peers and participate in an IP Technology Scavenger Hunt: https://hubs.li/Q04C5Tj80

Some of the most important infection prevention measures are the ones patients may never notice.

Operating rooms have evolved from battlefield tents and spectator-filled theaters into highly controlled environments. Modern healthcare construction incorporates ventilation, controlled airflow, containment barriers, and Infection Control Risk Assessments. Water-management programs help reduce risks from organisms such as Legionella.

Behind every safe healthcare environment is collaboration among infection preventionists, facilities teams, engineers, environmental services, clinical staff, construction partners, and many others.

Infection prevention is built into the air we breathe, the water we use, and the spaces where care takes place.
