District Rolfing Structural Integration Effective manual and movement therapy for pain relief, improved function and balance, and enhanced sports/yoga performance in Washington, D.C.
(2)

Structural bodywork addresses structural imbalance throughout the whole body. It identifies and releases blocks and old patterns of movement, resulting in reduction in chronic pain, increased range or motion and improved balance, improved performance in sports and yoga, and more open breath and expression. Integral Rolfing offers two structural modalities - Rolfing Structural Integration and Thai Bodywork.

Bessel van der Kolk — How Trauma Lodges in the Body

A fascinating conversation between Krista Tippett & Bessel Van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps Score. He gives a personal shout out to Rolfing, which he credits with helping him overcome his own childhood trauma, but more importantly any activity or therapy which helps get you in touch with your body can help build resilience to trauma.

Just finishing a week recharging in Iceland and three days studying the spine and pelvis with the inimitable Jean Pierre Barral. His classes are always enlightening, but especially in a smaller group and such an inspiring setting. Thanks to Erla Olafsdottir at the Upledger institute of Iceland for organizing such a great class! Back to work with some new ideas on Tuesday!

Charming but also a little sad. Feeling the earth with our feet is our birthright as humans & part of our natural body intelligence, but how often do we have the opportunity in our day to day lives?

Cheetahs on the Edge--Director's Cut

Incredible slow motion footage of a running cheetah, reaching speeds of 60 mph. The cheetah's body is constant motion, but it's head and eyes stay perfectly level and focused on the "prey" in front of it. Keeping the head level requires an incredible amount of coordination between the feet, the muscles that hold the head, and the eyes, all happening without thought - coordination which is only possible because the body's proprioception, or sense of where each part is in space.

Proprioception is just as important for people - if someone has a limited sense of where their feet are, it's not surprising they may have issues with balance as well as trouble in higher up in the body.

Radiofrequency Pulses End Back Pain

Radiofrequency pulses directed at nerves, with some steroid injection, reduced pain over 90% of recipients with hernias (80% had no pain). Steroid injections alone reduced pain for only 65% (55% had no pain).

Takeaway:
• Steroid injections and back surgery don’t give great results
• Modulating the tension in the nerve itself created long term response.
• Over 90% of patients with back pain and herniation got results only from addressing the nerve itself – not the articular restriction.
• As many as 15% of patients who undergo back surgery for sciatica or disk herniation do not have a good outcome.

Unfortunately in this study they didn’t look at radiofrequency pulses without steroid injection. Steroid injection often helps short term, but has side effects which inhibit healing long term - so it can’t be used frequently. But it’s really interesting that addressing the tension within the nerve created such strong long term effects. Always consider the least invasive methods first!

Received an intriguing invitation today from Ms. Wamala at Georgetown Sun Cryo to visit their office on O St. and try out one of their therapies which "harness the power of light and ice." Hmm - which should I choose? The infrared sauna, jade pod or localized cryo? Headed over Thursday to check it out & also give her a Rolfing/visceral manipulation demo! Very curious and looking forward to it!!!

The appendix plays an important role in gut health, and nearly two-thirds of patients with an infected appendix that hasn’t ruptured (so-called uncomplicated appendicitis) do as well or better when treated with antibiotics than those who have the appendix surgically removed.

Just finished a wonderful class in New York with Ken Frey of the Barral Institute on the thorax. This is beautiful work which addresses tension in the neck and chest, the thoracic inlet, and deeper structures around the lungs and heart. It's gentle and pain free, but very deep and truly transformational for anyone with an issue in these areas. This is my second time to take this class...retaking a class allows me to check my touch, refine my skills and get the insight of another teacher. I love Ken's teaching and the group in New York... always a pleasure to reconnect and share insights with this crew.

What if the Placebo Effect Isn’t a Trick?

It's not all in your mind... the placebo effect is real. It impacts our biochemistry not just to dull pain, but to help us get better. Who knew that caring and healing rituals can improve our health and aid recovery?

Simply having someone listen to us and having positive things to do can help a lot.

The Healthy Pain Conversation

Good communication is the key to good therapy. One of the things I really love about Egoscue is that communication & listening take precedence over what's "right" in textbook terms. No matter how good the idea, it doesn't work if the person doesn't take it up. I know something, but my clients are the experts in their experience; what feels good or bad; & what they can and will do. I may coax, cajole, persuade, and even lightly browbeat; but I cannot create change in someone else, only suggest or facilitate it.

We try but I like all therapists am imperfect. The other day I was tired and realized after a session I had talked at, rather than with the person I was working with. I apologized when I saw her again she gracefully accepted the apology. The goal is always to enter into dialogue and not to lecture, whether in words or when talking to the body through touch.

Explaining pain or indeed explaining any symptom or medical condition is a conversation. The critical element of healthy conversation is invitation – a feature that we usually don’t t…

Surgery for Chronic Pain: Risky and Costly

The evidence is more and more clear: surgery does not help many cases of chronic knee and back pain, and given the real risks of side effects less invasive approaches (massage, acupuncture, yoga, behavioral medicine) should be tried.

Learn how to discover & care for your body like you never did before. The Yamuna Body Rolling (YBR) technique is a revolutionary self–care technique that combines self-massage, weight bearing exercise, core strengthning and postural correction. YBR is a profound, yet simple approach that consists of specific routines using 6 to 10 inch inflatable balls. The organic pressure of the balls on the body helps alleviate muscle tension and restrictions, while it lengthens and strengthens the muscle sinew. It also decompresses joints and increases range of motion, improves bone quality and corrects posture. YBR helps develop core strength, reduce stress, and increases body awareness. Because YBR can be applied on the entire body, it helps you to learn how to take care of your musculoskeletal issues and to prevent injuries. The YBR technique helps empower people of all age and all fitness backgrounds to learn how, get stronger, feel younger
and be in the most optimal health.

Beautiful idea of three centers of intelligence - gut, heart, and mind- and a good reminder that "being in our heads" isn't the only way to see intelligence. Our gut is just as likely to save our life in a crisis.
