Food getting stuck when you swallow or fluid coming up into your throat?

Maybe you've started cutting your food smaller. Chewing longer. Reaching for water with every bite. Quietly avoiding bread or meat because they don't go down like they used to.

Trouble swallowing is not a normal part of getting older, and it's not something to push through. New or worsening swallowing problems always deserve an evaluation, especially after 50. Most causes are very treatable, and the ones that aren't minor are exactly the reason not to wait.

Fluid coming into your throat will not be treated with antacid medications. You need an evaluation to make sure your stomach’s anatomy is not the problem.
If this sounds like you, or like a parent you've been worrying about at the dinner table, an evaluation is the smart next step. It's a simple visit that can bring a lot of peace of mind.

Dr. Rob Allen, Dr. Ryan Nolan, and our foregut surgery team are here in Watsonville. Don't wait to get checked. Reach out at the link below, or call our office at (831) 768-6266.

Shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand pain?

What the first year after bariatric surgery actually looks like.

We could show you dramatic before-and-after photos. Instead, here's the honest version.

The first few weeks are an adjustment. You'll follow a staged diet, starting with liquids, and relearn how to eat with the full support of your bariatric team, including a dedicated nutritionist. It takes patience, and you'll have our team with you through every step.

Months 2 through 6 are when most people feel the shift. Energy comes back. Clothes fit differently. Many patients start reducing medications for diabetes or blood pressure with their doctor's guidance.

By months 6 through 12, the new routine feels like your routine. The wins that matter most usually aren't numbers on a scale. They're keeping up with your kids, sleeping through the night, climbing stairs without stopping.

It's a real commitment, and nobody should pretend otherwise. But you won't do it alone. Our team supports you at every stage, from your first consult through every follow-up.

Thinking seriously about it? Reach out at the link below to talk through your options with our surgeons, Dr. Rob Allen and Dr. Ryan Nolan, and the rest of our team, or call our office at (831) 768-6266.

You don't have to play tennis to get tennis elbow.

Most people who have it have never picked up a racket. Tennis elbow comes from repeating the same gripping and wrist motions over and over, the kind that come with harvesting, pruning, construction work, gardening, cooking, or long days at a keyboard.

It usually starts as pain on the outside of the elbow and can spread down the forearm. Over time, simple things like shaking hands, lifting a coffee cup, or turning a doorknob can start to hurt.

Dr. Jennifer Etcheson is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with specialized training in hand and upper extremity care from the Cleveland Clinic. She treats elbow pain, including tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, along with nerve compression like cubital tunnel syndrome, the one that causes tingling in the ring finger and pinky.

If elbow pain has been hanging on, it's worth having it looked at. Coastal Healthcare Orthopedics is at 1820 Main Street in Watsonville. Call (831) 728-4227 or learn more here:

That bulge will not fix itself.

Maybe you noticed it months ago. A bulge in your groin or belly that shows up when you lift, cough, or stand too long. It doesn't hurt much, so you've been living with it.

Here's the truth about hernias: if you are a male, groin hernias can safely be watched, and if you are a female or have severe pain, they need prompt repair before they become an emergency. Even the small hernias that do not bother you much get bigger over time. As they get bigger, they get more painful and harder to repair surgically.

Bottom line, any groin hernia should warrant a simple conversation with a general surgeon. A quick evaluation tells you where you stand. If yours is one to watch, great, now you know. If it needs repair, catching it early usually means a simpler surgery and an easier recovery.

You don't have to drive over the hill for answers. Our surgeons, Dr. Rob Allen and Dr. Ryan Nolan, evaluate and repair hernias right here in Watsonville. Reach out for an evaluation at the link below, or call our office at (831) 768-6266.

Fall sports are back, and with them come the injuries that don't get much attention. A shoulder that pops during a tackle. A wrist that takes the full weight of a fall. Fingers bent back on a block at the net. Most of these get iced, taped, and played through.

Sometimes that's fine. Sometimes it isn't. A finger that's still swollen and stiff a week later, a wrist that hurts to push off of, or a shoulder that feels like it might give out again are all worth having looked at. Hand and wrist injuries in particular are easy to underestimate, and they are much simpler to treat early than after months of working around them.

Dr. Jennifer Etcheson is fellowship trained in hand and upper extremity surgery and treats patients of all ages for shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand injuries. If it isn't getting better on its own, come see us.

Still taking a daily pill for heartburn?

If you've been on reflux medication for years, you're not alone. Millions of people take a PPI every morning without ever asking the bigger question: why is the reflux still there?

Daily medication isn't your only option. Persistent reflux deserves a real evaluation, especially if you're over 50 and have been managing symptoms for a long time. Long-standing reflux can sometimes lead to pre-cancerous changes in the esophagus, a condition called Barrett's esophagus, and the only way to know is to get checked.
An evaluation doesn't commit you to anything. It just gives you answers, and options you may not know you have.

Dr. Rob Allen, Dr. Ryan Nolan, and our foregut surgery team see patients right here in Watsonville. Ask about a reflux evaluation at the link below, or call our office at (831) 768-6266.
