We often think an apology is what repairs a relationship.

But sometimes what the other person is really longing for is to know you understand what it was like to experience you.

It’s hard to move on from something that was never acknowledged.

An apology and acknowledgment aren’t always the same thing.

There was a time in my own marriage when I thought if we could just communicate better, everything else would fall into place.

What I’ve learned is that communication matters, but security changes everything.

When you know your heart is safe with someone, it’s easier to be honest. It’s easier to be vulnerable. It’s easier to admit when you’re hurt, afraid, or wrong. And when you don’t feel safe, even the simplest conversation can feel like a risk.

This isn’t just something I’ve learned as a therapist. It’s something I’ve had to learn as a wife.

I’m still growing in this, too.

Some people don’t deserve unlimited access to your thoughts. I know what it’s like to replay conversations, question yourself, and carry people who never carried you. Protect your peace. Sometimes healing starts with an eviction notice. 💜

My heart has been heavy since hearing about Nolan Wells, and I know I’m not the only parent feeling that way. As parents, we don’t always need someone to have the answers. Sometimes we just need a safe place where our fears are understood and our hearts have room to breathe. My heart has been heavy since hearing about Nolan Wells. As both a therapist and the mother of a Black son and daughter who attend school in predominantly white spaces, I know many parents are carrying fear, grief, and unanswered questions.

If that’s you, I’d love to hold space for you. Through Counseling With Intention, I’m offering two free Parent Support Circles for African American parents and parents raising Black children. Whether you join virtually or in person, my hope is that you’ll leave feeling heard, supported, and better equipped to support your child through moments like this.
