Before you jump on a GLP-1, ask yourself a few questions.
Are you strength training consistently? Do you actually understand what a balanced diet looks like? How often are you drinking? Are your weekends undoing everything you worked toward during the week?
Now, this video is obviously a little tongue-in-cheek, so let’s make something clear.
GLP-1s are some of the most effective weight loss medications we’ve ever developed. Their effectiveness is undeniable, and for the right individual, they can be life-changing.
My issue isn’t with the medication. It’s with how easily medication can become the entire solution rather than one component of a larger plan.
We’re seeing people turn to these medications without any real intention of changing their lifestyle, improving their nutritional knowledge, developing an exercise routine, or addressing the psychological components that contributed to their weight struggles in the first place.
And that’s where I think we’re missing the bigger picture.
Many people intend to stay on these medications indefinitely, which can be a perfectly reasonable medical decision. But for those who eventually discontinue treatment, weight regain is common. Part of that is biological, but we also can’t ignore the role of behaviors, education, and psychological factors that may never have been addressed.
Losing weight and actually improving your health are not necessarily the same thing.
A lower number on the scale doesn’t automatically mean you’re stronger, healthier, or better equipped to maintain your progress.
We need to place more emphasis on improving people’s understanding of nutrition, developing sustainable exercise habits, building a healthier relationship with food, and addressing the behaviors that influence their health.
That’s what I mean by improving your wellness IQ.
Medication can be an incredibly valuable tool, but it shouldn’t replace education, accountability, and meaningful lifestyle changes.
The goal shouldn’t just be weight loss. It should be improving your overall health and creating a lifestyle that supports it.
Whether you’re using a GLP-1 or not, those fundamentals still matter.
