American Liver Foundation has proudly named Michael Karin, PhD, from Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, as the recipient of its 2026 Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award, recognizing nearly five decades of groundbreaking research.

Dr. Karin’s discoveries have helped deepen our understanding of liver disease and laid important groundwork for future approaches to prevention and treatment.

“We are so honored to recognize Dr. Karin for his trailblazing research discoveries that have helped illuminate the connections between inflammation, metabolism, and liver disease—connections that open potential paths to preventing and treating steatohepatitis and other metabolic conditions,” said Lorraine Stiehl, Chief Executive Officer of American Liver Foundation.

Meet your Liver Life Champion, Liver Health Heroes, and sponsors for Liver Life Walk Arizona!

2026 LIVEr Champion, Jessi Trego, is a mother of two young daughters whose life was saved with a liver transplant in January 2026 after experiencing acute liver failure. Today, she hopes to use her story to raise awareness for liver disease.

Today, November 1, American Liver Foundation’s 30-member team will take on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, running to raise awareness and funds for the nearly 100 million Americans affected by liver disease.

For many of these runners, the mission is deeply personal. They’re transplant recipients, healthcare professionals, family members and advocates running in honor of loved ones and everyone affected by liver disease. 💚
