The bubbling cauldron is practically synonymous with witches. But the story behind this familiar Halloween image reaches much further back than the witch’s brew.

🌿Long before cauldrons became associated with witchcraft, they were practical vessels used for cooking, heating liquids, and preparing ingredients.

Over time, the cauldron also took on symbolic meaning in folklore and mythology. In Welsh mythology, the cauldron associated with Ceridwen is connected to inspiration and wisdom. In Irish mythology, the Dagda’s cauldron represents abundance and nourishment.

As stories about witches developed throughout European history, the cauldron became part of the imagery surrounding magical brews and mysterious transformations. Literature, theatre, and popular culture helped turn it into the Halloween icon we recognize today.

But the cauldron has never represented just one thing.

It is an everyday object with a history shaped by practical use, mythology, folklore, and centuries of storytelling.

✨ Swipe through to discover how the cauldron became one of witchcraft’s most enduring symbols.

🕯️ When you think of a witch’s cauldron, what comes to mind first?

So… we got a little bored in the studio 🍨🧼

We had soap. We had a sundae dish. And apparently, we had absolutely no intention of leaving well enough alone.
And just like that, Soapy Sundaes was born. 😂

For our first little experiment, we gave the Samhain soap bar the sundae treatment. 🌑

Is this what we planned to do with our day? Not exactly.

Are we going to do it again? Oh, absolutely.

Welcome to Soapy Sundaes, our new Sunday series where we get a little creative with the soaps waiting to be discovered at Betula’s Botanica.

✨ The Samhain soap is available in-store and online.

And since we’ve apparently started a thing, tell us: which soap should we turn into a sundae next?

What Is a Familiar? The animal companion that seems to know a little more than it should….The witch and her black cat. The raven on her shoulder 🐦‍⬛🐈‍⬛

We see these images everywhere, but the history of the familiar goes far beyond the stories we know today.

In early modern European folklore and witchcraft beliefs, familiars were often described as supernatural spirits that assisted witches, sometimes appearing in animal form.

During the witchcraft trials of the 16th and 17th centuries, these beliefs became part of the accusations made against people suspected of practicing witchcraft.

Over time, the concept evolved.

Today, some practitioners view familiars as spiritual allies, while others use the term to describe an animal with whom they share a meaningful spiritual connection. Others understand the familiar primarily as a figure from folklore.

There is no single definition shared by every witch or tradition, and not every animal companion is considered a familiar.

That evolution is part of what makes the history so fascinating. A concept once entangled in fear and accusation has taken on new meanings in contemporary spiritual practice. 🌿

Swipe through to explore the folklore, history, and modern interpretations behind the familiar.

🐈‍⬛ What do you think of when you hear the word familiar? A spiritual companion, a beloved animal, or a fascinating piece of folklore?
