By the time a lot of women get to my office, they know more about their health than they ever wanted to know.
They’ve spent years trying to figure out what is wrong, more than they want to talk about on specialty testing, worked with multiple so-called functional providers, read everything they can find about their symptoms, and probably have a cabinet full of supplements they bought because at some point someone told them each one was going to help.
And somehow, after all of that, they still don’t really know what is wrong.
That right there is the part I have a problem with.
You already have tons of information. And, in fact, you are drowning in it.
What you need is someone who can look at the whole picture and start narrowing it down for you.
When someone comes into my office with years of symptoms and testing behind her, I’m not trying to find every single thing in her body that could possibly be less than perfect. I’m trying to figure out what actually matters right now. What is the pattern underneath all of these symptoms? Where does it make the most sense to start? What can we prioritize that might explain several of the things she has been chasing separately for years?
I insist that good functional medicine should not make your health feel more complicated. I think it should finally start making things make sense.
You shouldn’t leave your fifth practitioner with another giant folder of information and an even longer list of things you’re supposed to fix, half of them conflicting with what the last person told you. You should leave with a clearer understanding of what we’re working on, why we’re working on it, and what actually matters right now.
If you have all the testing, all the supplements, all the information and still don’t feel like anyone has actually made sense of your case, comment PATTERNS and I’ll send you what we look at differently.
