Naturally, I’ll be talking about blood sugar on October 4th. 😉
Most of my work focuses on helping women better understand blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes and metabolic health, especially during perimenopause and midlife.
But we usually talk about those things in relation to diabetes, weight, energy, or cardiovascular health….with good reason, of course!
But what about the brain?
For October 4th, I’m digging into why blood sugar and metabolic health belong in the conversation about cognitive health and Alzheimer’s disease too.
We’ll talk about what we know about insulin resistance, chronically elevated blood sugar, and inflammation, why the health of our blood vessels matters to the brain, and why this conversation becomes especially important in midlife.
I’m also going to bring in some of the newer research looking at how our metabolic environment may influence the brain’s own immune system and the cells responsible for protecting and maintaining brain health over time.
I find this piece especially fascinating because it takes the blood sugar conversation way beyond simply thinking about diabetes.
We know that Alzheimer’s is incredibly complex, so this is not just about blaming blood sugar, promising prevention, or suggesting we can control everything.
It’s about understanding that cognitive health has a long story, one that may begin YEARS before we ever notice memory changes, and metabolic health appears to be one meaningful piece of that bigger picture.
For me, that makes the way we care for our metabolic health in our 40s, 50s, and beyond feel even more important.
I’ll be sharing Blood Sugar & the Brain: Understanding the Metabolic Connection as part of: Let’s Talk: Understanding Alzheimer’s, Cognitive Decline, and Dementia Support
Exploring risk factors, blood sugar, lifestyle, dementia care navigation, and meaningful connection through an integrative and whole-person lens
