"Adrenal fatigue" — is it real? Your top questions, answered honestly.
Q: Is "adrenal fatigue" a real medical diagnosis?
A: No. It's not recognized by the Endocrine Society or any major medical body. There's no validated test that can diagnose it — because it isn't a defined condition.
Q: Then why do so many people get told they have it?
A: Chronic exhaustion is very real. But it almost always has an explainable cause — thyroid disease, iron deficiency, poor sleep, depression, perimenopause. "Adrenal fatigue" became a catch-all label without real diagnostic criteria behind it.
Q: So what IS a real adrenal condition?
A: Adrenal insufficiency, including Addison's disease — a rare, serious condition where the adrenal glands don't make enough cortisol. It's diagnosed with specific blood tests, like an ACTH stimulation test, not a symptom checklist.
Q: What do real adrenal insufficiency symptoms look like?
A: Severe fatigue, unintentional weight loss, low blood pressure, salt cravings, nausea, and skin darkening. Left untreated, it can become life-threatening — exactly why real testing matters.
Q: What about the at-home cortisol and saliva tests sold online?
A: Most aren't validated diagnostic tools, and supplements marketed for "adrenal support" aren't treating a defined condition. If you're exhausted, the right move is a real workup — not a label and a supplement regimen.
Tired isn't a diagnosis. If you're exhausted and want a real answer, let's find it together.
