Autumn is not only something we can see. It is something we can hear. Find a comfortable place outside, close your eyes, and listen quietly for at least 1 minute.

Draw a simple sound map with yourself in the center. Add each sound around you in the direction it came from: rustling leaves, calling birds, buzzing insects, falling acorns, wind, water, or footsteps. Which sound was closest? Which was farthest away?

Wild animals do not prepare for winter in the same way. Some migrate, some store food, some grow thicker coats, and others search for sheltered places to rest.

Go outside and search for evidence of winter preparation. Look for squirrels gathering nuts, birds feeding, insects hiding under bark, chewed seeds, nests, burrows, or animals becoming more active. What clues can you find?

There’s a whole world beneath the fallen leaves!

This week at Nature Scouts, we learned about native trees and explored what happens to their leaves after they fall. Those crunchy leaves become shelter for tiny critters and gradually break down, returning nutrients to the soil and helping support new growth.

We finished with clay art, bringing creativity into our nature explorations. A session full of discovery, muddy hands, and appreciation for the little things that keep our forests thriving!

Cool, damp October weather can bring mushrooms of many shapes, colors, and sizes. The mushroom we see is only one part of a much larger organism living within soil or wood.

After a rainy day, take a mushroom walk. Count how many different kinds you can find, then sketch one without touching or disturbing it. Notice its cap, stem, texture, color, and where it is growing. Look and photograph, but never taste a wild mushroom.

Even when goldenrod’s bright yellow flowers start to fade, the plant is still hard at work. Its fluffy seeds are beginning to travel, and its stems and leaves continue to shelter insects.

Look closely at a patch of goldenrod. What do you see? Can you find seeds, tiny holes, curled leaves, insect eggs, or small creatures hiding among the stems? Return later to see who may be using the dried plants for shelter.

Leaves contain several colors, but during spring and summer, green chlorophyll hides most of them. As the days grow shorter, trees produce less chlorophyll, allowing the other colors-red, orange, yellow, and even purple-to appear.

Collect several fallen leaves and arrange them by color. Look closely at each one. What do you see?

Our first night of fall Nature Scouts rocked!

We kicked off the season with a get-to-know-you game, then created our own rock hunting kits and headed out to search for different types of rocks.

We ended the evening with a sweet twist; making our own rocks out of Oreo cookies!

Our first-ever Saturday Nature Scouts session was full of fall discoveries! We searched for signs of the changing season and found many little critters, including a lot of spiders. We also built nature boats and set them sailing, then shared apples while reading the book Wonderfall (by Michael Hall).

Thank you to all the families who joined us for a morning of exploring, creating, reading, and enjoying autumn together. We loved starting this new Saturday adventure with you!

Plants are busy sending their seeds into the world. Take a walk and look for fallen seed pods, cones, nuts, and winged seeds. Sort your finds by shape, size, color, or how you think they travel.

Can you find a seed that flies, floats, rolls, sticks, or gets carried by an animal? Collect only common fallen items, and leave plenty behind for wildlife.

October is full of changes waiting to be noticed. Step outside and look for signs of the season: a changing leaf, a seed or nut, an insect, an animal preparing for winter, something you can hear. Visit the same place again later this month to see what has changed.

What are the first signs of October you noticed?
