✨ FRIDAY WIN: Sometimes You Just Need Someone to CONNECT ALL THE DOTS! ✨
She came to Harmony Hub Health with one simple goal: "I just want to feel like myself again."
A mom of three young children, she was struggling with:
😴 Exhaustion despite 7–8 hours of sleep
🧠 Brain fog and forgetfulness
😣 Severe PMS and irritability
💇♀️ Hair falling out in chunks
🌙 Night sweats
⚖️ Stubborn weight gain
🎈 Bloating
She thought her hormones were out of balance. Maybe her progesterone was low. Maybe this was just what happened after having three babies.
And here's where I have to say something that might ruffle a few feathers…
Hormone clinics seem to be popping up on every corner these days.
And while hormone therapy absolutely has its place, I worry that too many women are being offered hormones before anyone takes the time to figure out what's actually happening in their bodies.
It would have been easy to hear her complaints of PMS, irritability, fatigue, and poor sleep quality and simply start her on progesterone.
After all, those are symptoms commonly associated with progesterone concerns.
But what if progesterone isn't the problem?
What if we had just prescribed it and missed something much more important?
That's exactly why we took a deeper dive.
We reviewed her history, her symptoms, her previous labs, and everything that had changed since her last pregnancy.
Then we ordered a comprehensive evaluation.
🔎 HERE'S WHAT WE UNCOVERED:
🦋 A MAJOR THYROID CHANGE! Her TSH had dropped from 1.08 to just 0.029 in a matter of months!
Her circulating thyroid hormones were still within range, but this significant change warranted further investigation.
Could this be postpartum thyroiditis? Graves' disease? Subclinical hyperthyroidism? We don't know yet, but we know it deserves an endocrinology evaluation.
🩸 IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA! Her ferritin was only 18, along with low hemoglobin and iron saturation.
Hello, exhaustion, brain fog, and hair shedding! These findings could be contributing to several of her symptoms.
☀️ LOW VITAMIN D AND LOW CALCIUM! Additional findings that deserve attention and follow-up.
🌸 AND THE PROGESTERONE WE INITIALLY SUSPECTED?
It was actually appropriate for the phase of her menstrual cycle!
Let that sink in.
She came in thinking she needed progesterone, but her labs did not demonstrate a progesterone deficiency.
And here's something important: Not every woman with severe PMS has low progesterone.
Sometimes it's about how the nervous system responds to normal hormonal fluctuations. Conditions like PMDD can cause significant symptoms even when hormone levels are within expected ranges.
💡 SO WHAT'S THE FRIDAY WIN?
We didn't just hear "PMS" and write a progesterone prescription.
We didn't blame everything on being postpartum.
We didn't tell her that her exhaustion was simply part of raising three little kids.
And we didn't stop at a previously normal TSH.
WE CONNECTED THE DOTS.
We identified a significant thyroid abnormality, iron deficiency anemia, and additional nutritional and mineral concerns.
Now she has a plan, an endocrinology referral, and a clearer understanding of what might be contributing to her symptoms.
Is she better overnight? No.
But we have identified important issues that need attention, and that's where meaningful progress begins.
❤️ THIS is why I practice functional medicine.
I am not anti-hormone therapy. We offer hormone optimization at Harmony Hub Health, and I believe it can be incredibly beneficial when appropriately prescribed.
But I am against treating a symptom without first asking WHY it's happening.
Not every tired woman needs testosterone.
Not every irritable woman needs progesterone.
Not every woman gaining weight needs a GLP-1.
And not every woman struggling after pregnancy should be told it's just motherhood.
Sometimes she needs someone to sit down, listen to her entire story, take a deep dive into her health, and CONNECT ALL THE DOTS.
Because the goal isn't just to give someone a prescription.
The goal is to understand what's happening, address what we can, and help her feel like herself again.
That's the Harmony Hub difference. 💙
We love to treat and manage hyperthyroid at HHH, but I do refer all first time evaluations to endocrinology. (That's for many that think functional medicine is anti-specialist and conventional medicine)
