“You don’t want my kidney.”
We hear this more often than you might think, and we want people to know something important: PLEASE DON’T COUNT YOURSELF OUT BEFORE YOU EVEN TRY.
You may think you aren’t healthy enough, that your blood type won’t match, or that you wouldn’t be a good candidate to donate. But you don’t have to make that decision yourself.
Chris is listed for a kidney transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and we are doing everything we can to find a living donor.
The living kidney donation process at MGH is incredibly thorough. Potential donors complete confidential screening, medical testing, and evaluations with a team of specialists. A multidisciplinary selection committee reviews their candidacy to determine whether donation is safe and appropriate.
The medical team makes that decision — not you!
And what if you aren’t a direct match for Chris? There may still be an option through paired kidney donation, where a donor can give a kidney to another compatible recipient while Chris receives one from a compatible donor.
You are NOT committing to donate by asking questions or starting the screening process. You are simply opening the door to a possibility that could change our lives forever.
Chris needs a kidney now. We need people willing to explore whether they could help. If you have ever thought, “You don’t want my kidney,” please reconsider. You may be the person we have been searching for.
