National Midwifery Week: Honoring the Legacy
Before birth work had titles, certifications, and credentials, Black Granny Midwives were caring for mothers, catching babies, and supporting entire communities.
They carried knowledge passed down through generations and provided care during times when Black families often faced limited access to respectful medical care.
We honor the many Black Grand and Granny Midwives, along with the countless other midwives whose names were never recorded. Their hands welcomed generations of babies into the world and helped create the next generations of midwives.
💜Margaret Charles Smith attended nearly 3,000 births during her career.
💜Gladys Nichols Milton safely delivered more than 2,000 babies.
💜Mary Francis Hill Coley, lovingly known as “Miss Mary,” served generations of families in rural Georgia.
💜Onnie Lee Logan served Black families in Alabama for decades as a respected community midwife.
💜Maude Callen, a Black nurse-midwife, dedicated decades of her life to caring for families in rural South Carolina.
We remember their hands. We honor their wisdom, legacy, and sacrifice—the sacrifices that paved the way for me to do what I love: serve as a Certified Community-Based Doula and Holistic Health Practitioner.
This care, wisdom, and support are designed into every experience at Sensual Selections and Spa. We thank God for paving the way, and we recognize that we still have so much more work to do.
Self-Care Sunday can also be a time to give thanks to God and our ancestors who paved the way for us.
