Nothing prepares you for sudden loss. Especially a sudden loss of a pet.

Many people think animals are just that, animals. But in my life and in my beliefs, my animals become much more than that. They become family members, trusted companions, a source of comfort, and our home.

My closest friend and loving kitty, Emmylou, crossed the rainbow bridge.

I want to take a moment to talk about what a beautiful companion she has been to me for the last 7 years.

She “randomly” appeared at my house about 6 months before I unexpectedly lost my best friend and familiar of 13 years, Aurora Kitty. I took a lot of comfort in watching Emmylou mimic some of the things Aurora did because she had learned them from her.

Like trying to hide her fat body in my dresser and never really being able to figure it out. Instead, she would just pull all of my underwear and bras out of each drawer because her chubby self couldn’t quite figure out how to hide.

Whereas Aurora would hide in there and somehow open the drawers from the inside in the middle of the night, scaring me.

But it wasn’t just the silly similarities. Emmylou had this way of knowing me. She always seemed to know when life was a little hard for me. She would jump up on me to get my attention and rub her face against mine, like she was reminding me that she was there.

She would meow at me to get my attention and follow me around the house like my little shadow. She just always seemed to know when I needed her.

Those little things brought me so much comfort. It was like having little pieces of Aurora still around, while also getting to love and know this completely different little soul who had found her way to me when I needed her most.

Emmylou was my closest friend, my living companion, and my comfort. She was there through so many moments of my life over the last 7 years. She was part of my everyday life, my routines, my quiet moments, my hard days, and my happy ones.

Her absence feels enormous.

For my sake today, friends, will you love on your furbabes a little extra? Speak love and appreciation into them. Give them an extra cuddle. Let them know how much they mean to you.
