Do you color your hair? How long have you been doing it?
For nearly 25 years, I colored my hair. Browns, auburns, all variations on what used to be my natural brown hair. It was fun, artistic, and also quite a commitment to the coloring process.
After a while, there came to be one big problem. I had white streak at the front that refused to cooperate. Every time I colored my hair, it shone through anyway.
At some point I realized I had been managing a cover-up for 25 years and I had no idea what was underneath it. I wanted to see my real hair. So I chopped it short and stopped coloring.
What grew in was brilliant. Whites and silvers and grays I had never seen before. Distinctive. Completely unique to me. I felt liberated. I also felt a little foolish, in the best possible way. I had spent 25 years covering something up that turned out to be one of my favorite things about myself.
I see this with my clients too. Not with hair, but with health.
Something has been there for so long that it feels like just the way things are. Nobody has ever asked what is actually underneath it.
