Why Trauma Lives in the Body
-What Somatic Breath-work Can Offer
Some experiences are so overwhelming that words simply aren’t enough to explain what we’re going through.
When something devastating happens, we may know what has happened in our minds, but our bodies can continue to respond as though danger is still present.
We might feel constantly be on edge.
Struggle to relax, even when life appears calm.
Become overwhelmed by things that never used to bother us.
Or feel disconnected from ourselves, our emotions and the people around us.
And sometimes, we can’t even explain why we feel the way we do.
**Because trauma isn’t always something we remember. Sometimes, it’s something we continue to experience.**
THIS IS WHERE SOMATIC BREATHWORK CAN OFFER A DIFFERENT APPROACH.
Healing doesn’t always begin with finding the right words or revisiting every painful memory.
Sometimes, it begins with learning to notice what is happening within us.
To recognise the signals our bodies are giving us.
To gently reconnect with ourselves.
And, over time, to develop ways of responding to stress that help us feel more grounded, present and supported.
The Somatic Breath-work approaches focus on the connection between the body, emotions and nervous system. It can complement talk therapies and may help some people develop a greater sense of safety and awareness.
This is not about forcing ourselves to relive the past.
It is not about pretending the pain never happened.
And it certainly is not about rushing the healing process.
*It is about understanding why we developed the ways we did to survive, and gently discovering that we may not need those same protective responses in every moment of our lives.*
Healing takes time.
Sometimes, we need to peel back the layers of protection we’ve carried for years, approaching each one with patience, compassion and support.
We cannot change what happened to us.
But with the right support, we can begin to change our relationship with what happened.
And that can be the beginning of something different.
**What if healing didn’t begin with asking yourself,
“What’s wrong with me?”
but instead,
“What has my body been trying to protect me from?”
If this is you, let’s start a conversation about trauma, the nervous system and the different ways we can support our healing journey.
